About a month or so ago I saw an option to redeem 7,500 Starwood Preferred Guest points for two luxury suite seats at a Cub's home game at Wrigley Field. I value SPG points at greater than two cents per point value, but I value this experience even higher than that. It just so happened that the deal appeared as I was trying to plan something special for my husband's birthday, so this became the cornerstone that we planned his birthday weekend around. Since I know that many of you also jumped on this deal, I wanted to share my experiences in the Starwood Preferred Guest Suite at Wrigley.

Pre-event Process:

I was contacted a couple of days after I purchased the tickets by a representative from the SPG Moments staff. I provided all the info they requested via email and then a few days after that I was sent the exact details for the event. Essentially we were to pick up our tickets at will-call the day of the game. We got there about an hour before the game started and were directed to one specific will-call window that could help us. They handed us our tickets and into the stadium we went. There were no hitches at all in this process.

The Suite:

Not surprisingly, the suite is located on the suite level where there are dozens of different suites. This one is specifically a Starwood Preferred Guest suite, and is labeled such on the outside with a plaque.

On the inside are large photos of exotic SPG properties. The suite has an indoor section where the food and drinks are located, plus an outdoor viewing area with 12 stadium seats. Inside the suite there are also four seats you can sit and watch the action from the temperature controlled indoors.

It was fun to hang out inside a little to chat with folks (shockingly about travel, miles, and points!), but I preferred to spend much of the time outdoors seeing, hearing, and smelling the game. Yes, games have a smell. ;) I do love the idea of having an indoor and outdoor sectioned off area available if we had brought our kiddo (as one couple there did) as it gives them more room to roam than a traditional stadium seat. As an aside, the others attending really were fun to talk to as they were all people who earn points and then redeemed for this purpose, so you automatically have something in common. Of course, if you don't want to socialize then you can just sit in your seat and watch the game.

The view was slightly toward the first-base side of home plate. More or less, the view was as good as it gets for viewing the whole field.

The food and drinks:

The menu for the suite consisted of the following:

Grilled Caprese Flatbread Squares (which were kind of bland)
Farmers Market Dips, Veggies, and Crostini (which was fine)
Bottomless Snack Attack Mix (yum)
Chicago Style Hot Dogs (perfect for a ballgame)
High Plains Bison Sausage Sampler (pretty good - loved the fixin's)
Tuscan Flatbread Sandwiches (yuck)
Grilled Caprese Flatbread Squares (which were kind of bland)
Farmers Market Dips, Veggies, and Crostini
Bottomless Snack Attack Mix and Tuscan Sandwiches
High Plains Bison Sausage Sampler
Chicago Style Hot Dogs

The drinks included: Heineken, Bud Light, a couple different wines, a local beer, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Water, and Sierra Mist.

When the desert cart came around about half-way into the game there was a little confusion as there was no authorized person in the suite to order the cart. Apparently there is usually an SPG rep in the suite, but we were told that person was at the Kentucky Derby the day we were there. We called the number on some info we got from SPG to see if we were supposed to have access to the dessert cart. One of the guys in the suite left that person a voicemail, but in the meantime I arranged to just pay for the dessert cart for the suite in honor of my husband's birthday. No one wanted to miss out, and I wasn't about to let the cake pass us by!

Luckily for my wallet, the voicemail left was received and someone came by to let us know that the dessert cart was authorized, and SPG was picking up the bill! Dessert "crisis" averted. ;)

It was all super delicious. I mean a shot in a Reese's Cup and a 'smores cake - does it get any better?!

We left at the top of the 9th inning to beat the crowds and head to the airport, but we had an amazing time. It was well worth the 7,500 SPG points and I'm excited to hear from more of you who got in on the same deal. Most of the time the best deal is to use miles or points for travel, but sometimes it pays off to use them for experiences as well. You can read more about the birthday weekend whirlwind experience here. Go Cubs!
