International travelers will soon have a new choice for free internet access, thanks to a partnership between Mastercard and Boingo Wireless. Starting today, the two companies are granting select HSBC cardholders access to over one million Boingo hotspots across the world. The new Boingo hotspot access will initially be available to cardholders from seven countries: Argentina, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
Boingo currently provides pay-per-use internet hotspots around the world, at venues including airports, coffee shops and sports stadiums. In a statement to The Points Guy, Mastercard noted this benefit meets the demand of high-end, frequent travelers.
"Our consumer research shows this is a top desired amenity," Marti Beller, Group Head of Global Products and Platforms for Loyalty Solutions at MasterCard, told TPG. "To have unlimited access to over one million Wi-Fi hotspots is a good engagement- and loyalty-inspiring benefit. There will be more to come in the next few months."
The rollout to additional partners will bring this perk to more high-end customers, including those holding Mastercard World or World Elite card products. Those who have a qualifying Mastercard card can sign up for the benefit immediately by visiting mastercard.boingo.com. While the Boingo free internet access program is launching with HSBC, Mastercard says it's holding discussions with additional issuers, and more cards could be added soon.
Although the program does currently exclude Mastercard holders in the United States, cardholders of The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express can also receive complimentary Boingo hotspot access. To sign up for the Boingo American Express preferred plan, cardholders can visit amex.boingo.com.
