Last month there were two major shopping mall mishaps:

First the American Airlines AAdvantage shopping site advertised a Verizon headset that would score 83,871 which Gary at View from the Wing covered.

Then there was the Delta Skymiles Shopping chargers for 2,300 Delta miles. Not so bad for a $5 purchase.

Well, both of them ended up being mistakes, but you can still get some miles out of them if you purchased either.

First, for AA all you need to do is submit an inquiry/missing miles request on this page and include the following information:
“I ordered the Verizon headset. I now understand that was a mistake, but here is my information. Can you please credit my account with 2,500 AA miles with the option to get another 2,500 with my next purchase? Thanks!
- AAdvantage number XXXXXXX
- Name Brian Kelly
- Email address [email protected]
- Verizon Order ID 1234567″

My reply several days later (there’s no information about restocking/sending it back but you should email them for return information if you want the restocking fee to be waived):
“As you may be aware, certain Verizon Wireless accessories were displaying on the AAdvantage eShoppingTM mall with an incorrect offer of 83,871 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. This was the result of a Cartera Commerce, Inc. system error. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused you, and will describe below the steps we are taking to remedy the situation

While the offer featured on the AAdvantage eShopping mall website gave a visual indication that online purchases of certain Verizon Wireless accessories would award 83,871 AAdvantage miles, this clearly was a mistake given the price of the item and the terms of the mileage offer for the purchase of new wireless service plans. Verizon’s Terms and Conditions for the offer clearly state that miles only can be earned on new wireless service plans, and not for accessories purchases. The specific Terms & Conditions language – which was available on the offer details page – is as follows:

“Reward eligible for reward plans only (new service, family share, add a line, upgrade and prepay). Reward is not eligible on accessories.”

In addition, the Terms and Conditions for the AAdvantage eShopping program, which apply to all purchases, also state that the conditions and restrictions imposed by the merchant define the requirements for a qualifying purchase and control your eligibility for AAdvantage miles.

While each of these Terms & Conditions relieve Cartera from an obligation to award AAdvantage miles for any accessory purchases which were incorrectly advertised as including a miles offer, we nevertheless realize this error may have encouraged you to buy an accessory you didn’t need or intend to keep. We therefore would like to offer you the following AAdvantage bonus miles:

· We will automatically post 2,500 AAdvantage bonus miles to your AAdvantage account within the next 10 business days.
· You will earn an additional 2,500 AAdvantage bonus miles if you make a new purchase through the AAdvantage eShopping mall in the next 30 days* (in addition to any other mileage offer associated with that qualifying purchase). AAdvantage bonus miles will be posted to your AAdvantage account within 45 days after the date the merchant notifies Cartera of a qualifying purchase.

If you have any additional questions about this matter, please contact us. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and look forward to your continued use of the AAdvantage eShopping mall to maximize your mileage earning.”

With the Verizon Delta mistake, you can get 500 miles.  Just submit a similar request here.
Contact: Brian Kelly
Reason for Inquiry:  Miles have not posted within 45 days (transaction prior to 9/30/2009)
Date of Inquiry: 9/15/2011

Details: I ordered an item from Verizon and was supposed to get 2,300 miles. The order number is 1234567

Can you look into this? Thanks!

About a week later I got the following response:

“Recently certain Verizon Wireless accessories were displaying on the Delta SkyMiles® Shopping Mall with an incorrect offer of 2,300 Delta Skymiles. This was the result of a Cartera Commerce, Inc. system error. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, and would like to remedy the situation.

While the offer featured on the Delta SkyMiles Shopping Mall gave a visual indication that online purchases of certain Verizon Wireless accessories would award 2,300 miles, this clearly was a mistake given the price of the item and the terms of the mileage offer limiting miles earning to the purchase of new wireless service plans. Verizon’s Terms and Conditions for the offer clearly state that miles can only be earned on new wireless service plans, and not for accessories purchases. The specific Terms & Conditions language – which was available on the offer details page – is as follows:

“Reward eligible for reward plans only (new service, family share, add a line, upgrade and prepay). Reward is not eligible on accessories.”

In addition, the Terms and Conditions for the Delta SkyMiles Shopping Mall, which apply to all purchases, also state that the conditions and restrictions imposed by the merchant define the requirements for a qualifying purchase, control your eligibility for miles and limit liability for inaccuracies on the Delta SkyMiles Shopping Mall.

While each of these Terms & Conditions relieve Cartera from an obligation to award miles for any accessory purchases which were incorrectly displayed as including a miles offer, we nevertheless realize this error was an inconvenience to you and may have encouraged you to buy an accessory you did not need or intend to keep. For your inconvenience, we therefore would like to offer you the following one time courtesy bonus:

· We will automatically post 500 bonus miles to your Delta SkyMiles account within the next 10 business days.

In addition to the bonus miles, we would like to make it as easy as possible for you to return the Verizon Wireless accessory if it was not a product you intended to use or keep. To return the accessory, please send a copy of your receipt and the accessory to: Cartera Commerce, Inc., One Cranberry Hill, Lexington, MA 02421, Attn: Delta SkyMiles Customer Support. Please note that even if you decide to return the accessory, you are still eligible for the one time courtesy bonus miles described above.

If you have any additional questions about this matter, please contact us. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and look forward to your continued use of the Delta SkyMiles Shopping Mall to maximize your mileage earning.”

While these are the two that have gotten the most “press”, do you have any updates on the Priority Club/Verizon issue?

They were supposed to give 5,300 points for one of those $5 chargers. I bought something like 5 of them, but haven’t gotten anything from them. I wrote to the contact address and got a canned response back saying something about waiting until 45 days after purchase for the points to post and then to contact them again if they don’t.

    So, any idea?

  • Marc

I received the same email from the AA Verizon mistake, but it has now been 10 business days, and still no 2,500 AA miles. I sent in another e-mail this morning. Time will tell….

  • Dewhit6959

What you got was more valuable than the points. You got a lesson in recognizing when “something appears to be too good, it is ” . You got off cheap at $25.00. Was the lesson learned ?

  • DJP_707

Since when was the delta purchase’s deemed to be a mistake? First I heard of that. I bought ten chargers from AA which was an obvious mistake (83K) mile), and 10 more from Delta (for 2500miles). All of which have now been sold on Ebay and amazon, to re coupe my investment. I have yet to get an email from either company saying there was a mistake. T&C say takes 8 weeks for points to post, so I’ll wait and see what happens but 500 points from delta is BS I won’t be accepting that offer! I have all my screen shots filed and receipts logged, and when the proper time has elasped I’ll begin to fight for proper compensation!

  • Brian

No lesson learned. I don’t even know what you think would be the lesson? I’m entitled to about 26k Priority Club points that I paid about $25 for. There’s been nothing communicated from Priority Club that says otherwise (like there has been from AA & Delta).

Also, to the “got off cheap” comment… $25 won’t be lost. Those chargers will be sold on ebay or returned for at least what I paid for them.

  • Flyer Fun

Dewhite6959, Is there a point to your comment? Or is it pure condescension?

  • Dewhit6959

Call it what you will. Sometimes you get what you pay for. The sooner that many recognize that deals such as these are not going to materialize into any gains, the sooner they are not sent out as “breaking deals” to those of us that actually pay for Brian’s and others services and less junk mail to open and read. Does anyone still remotely consider helping persons move their fortunes out of Nigeria or even open the offer ?

I think you should use pulldown “transaction subsequent to 9/2009″ rather than “prior”

  • David

This is so strange. I can’t find any record for this (in the mall or emails) other than the AMEX charge. Any idea how I can locate the order ID #?

Great post! I have been dragging my feet to send these emails and your links make it easy and has motivated me to take action. Thank you!

  • THEPOINTSGUY is awesome

Thanks for the reminder! I sent a message from your links. I appreciate it.

  • Millymiles

So how much will it cost to send back the charger (which cost me $5.41, including postage) to Cartera? The FedEx return label can only be used to send it back to Texas.

  • Anonymous

It’s almost 10 business days from the time I sent in email. The 2.5 k points have not posted yet.

  • bitachu

SO i ordered a touchstone with the AA shopping mall..i quickly got my 2500 miles a few days later..I then took my touchstone(even though I had a palm pre which the touchstone didn’t work due to my case) to my local verizon store..and they made the return there…. I did get the formal email saying I would get 2500 miles now and 2500 miles for an additional purchase….two weeks ago I made my 2nd purchase..spent 1$ on a restaurant.com gift certificate…the miles from that purchase(18mile/$) posted but I have yet to receive my 2nd 2500 miles bonus

  • Latimer

I received my 2,500 points today, 14 business days after receiving a reply from Cartera. It probably helped that I sent them a follow-up letter yesterday.

  • Benthelefty

Thanks for this post! I was going to e-mail you wondering what happened but you answered the question :)

  • Asdfasdfasd

I hope those people get their 83k miles.

  • Benthelefty

Although wasn’t the Delta charger thing August 14? At least that was my confirmation e-mail…but it looks like it worked for you so I’m not complaining ;)

  • HikerT

ROTF, maybe I can request the 2.5K for not trying extort miles for an obvious error.

  • emily

Thank you so much for this post! It’s not like I expect all the bloggers who posted about the deal to tell me how to get my money back and the bonus but I was beginning to be disappointed that no one had covered the topic clearly. Thank you :)

I bought two charges on the AA deal on two separate transactions, ideally with the goal of getting two sets of miles. I sent two separate e-mails on different days requesting the points, and they responded to me with the same stock e-mail to each one saying that I’d get the 2500 miles. One set of 2500 miles posted to my account 10 business days after, but it has been 10 business days since my second e-mail re: the second purchase, and no miles. I will send them a gentle reminder e-mail.

Some of you need to grow up. I find it hard to believe you have jobs of any value spending time trying to get these dilly dally prizes. Do any of you actually own anything ? Did you cry as children when the free prize in cereal wasn’t to your liking ?

  • Danray

How many order numbers does the Delta Verizon Charger have. I sent back a response to Delta with and order number and just got this response this morning:
    Dear
    Thanks for your inquiry.
    You asked:
“I ordered an item from Verizon on 8/10/11 and was supposed to get 2,300 miles. The Verizon Order No. is 005380030xxxx.

Unfortunately, we do not have record of you clicking through the Delta Skymiles Shopping mall to Verizon on 8/10/2011 to make this purchase. Therefore, it is not eligible for any miles.

    We apologize for any inconvenience.
    Thank you,
    Petra

So the only email receipt I have is from [email protected] and on it, it has a 10 digit order number.

The receipt in the box that I received the charger has a different 8 digit order number and in another place, a 12 digit order number. When I try to confirm through a link Verizon included in their email to check order status, it goes to a page not found.

  • NotACurmudgeon

And exactly why are YOU here? No job of any value, I believe.

I never got the email from AA giving me the option, so after mulling over filing a civil suit against them, lazyness got the better of me and I just sent the email that you have above. Will update on my progress.

  • BluTanglee

Don’t bother Legal Eagle. …..You couldn’t be bothered to write your own e-mail.
    Progress of what ?
