TPGtv Episode 16: Learning to Cook Vietnamese Food

After a long (and fun) night hitting the night life scene in Hanoi, I was ready to explore another side of the city — its cuisine. One of my favorite things about traveling is being able to see new places, immerse myself in foreign cultures and taste exciting flavors. The Vietnamese food scene is perhaps best well…

How Can I Earn a Small Number of Points or Miles Quickly?

TPG reader Jeffrey sent me a message on Facebook to ask about easy ways to earn rewards: “Do you have any ideas for how I can earn 2,000 British Airways Avios quickly and easily?” Coming up just short of an award redemption can be frustrating (and costly if it means missing out on good flight or hotel availability). While…

What’s the Best Credit Card for Earning Delta SkyMiles?

TPG reader Garrett sent me a message on Facebook to ask about earning Delta SkyMiles: “I’ve been an avid Delta Gold Amex cardholder for a while now, since I fly Delta almost exclusively. I know you’re a big fan of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, but is it worth getting even though I can’t transfer those points to my SkyMiles account?”…

Should Overhead Bin Space Be Assigned to Individual Seats?

TPG reader Peter sent me a tweet to ask about carry-on luggage: “Do you think overhead bin slots should be assigned to seats?” Boarding a commercial flight in the US sometimes reminds me of the Oklahoma land rush, since the competition to stake a claim to overhead bin space can be fast and fierce. To avoid checked bag fees, many…

Which Points Should I Use to Travel in the Hawaiian Islands?

TPG reader Nick sent me a tweet to ask about traveling in Hawaii: “Would it make sense to transfer Starpoints to Hawaiian Airlines for interisland travel?” I think Hawaii is one travel destination that really lives up to the hype. Each island has a lot to offer, and if you’ve got time to spare, it’s worth…

TPG reader Vishal sent me a message on Facebook to ask about Amex cards: “Is the Mercedes-Benz Amex Platinum card considered the same product as the regular Platinum card? Can I earn a sign-up bonus for each one, and do they have the same benefits?” Most credit card issuers have application restrictions that limit how many accounts you can…

How to Donate Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards to Points for Peace

I just returned from an amazing PeaceJam trip this weekend in Guatemala — the charity hosted a conference with Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú Tum. And to say I had an unbelievable time is an understatement. Rigoberta is such an inspiration; I think all who attended were moved by her teachings. (Complete details coming soon.) Points for Peace is…

TPGtv Episode 15: Hanoi’s Most Historic Hotel and Partying with the Locals

After an epic layover in London, a quick ride on the Eurostar train from London to Paris and an okay-but-snug flight on Vietnam Airlines’ A350, I finally reached Hanoi, the first stop on my first trip to Vietnam. I managed to sleep for most of the 11-hour and 20-minute flight, so I was able to…

Should I Request Compensation for a Hotel Mishap?

TPG reader Brian sent me a message on Facebook to ask about how to deal with a bad hotel experience: “I was recently staying at an IHG property when the fire alarm went off at 1:00am. What would you do in that situation to account for the disturbance: Should I ask for points or a discount, or should I…

Which Points Should I Redeem to Book a Rental Car?

TPG reader Heather sent me a message on Facebook to ask about rental cars: “I’m trying to rent a car using points; I could rent through Ultimate Rewards with my Sapphire Preferred card, or transfer points to United or Southwest and rent through one of those programs. Which method do you recommend?” To get the most out of your…
