Every Country's Top Tourist Attraction, According to TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor is known for being a great resource for travelers, since the travel site compiles ratings on all sorts of things to do, places to stay, and where to eat in almost every place in the world — yes, even North Korea — and each country has a section featuring its "Top Things to Do." Recently, the folks over at Vouchercloud took things one step further and created a beautiful map indicating all the number-one rated tourist attractions in each country.
Some of the destinations aren't all that surprising — like Canada's Niagara Falls or Machu Picchu in Peru — while the UK's top rated attraction is apparently the official Harry Potter Studio Tour, not the Tower Bridge or Buckingham Palace. This is because TripAdvisor bases its ratings solely on user reviews rather than creating a curated list of places picked by editors or travel experts. Central Park was the highest-rated thing to do in the US, with more than 89,000 reviews of New York City's iconic green space. The rest of the region was mainly topped by natural wonders, like the many pristine beaches of the Caribbean, while Mexico led with its National Museum of Anthropology.
Surprising standouts in Europe were Germany's Miniatur Wunderland, which is the world's largest model railroad exhibition — we even wrote about its world's smallest airport exhibition last year — beating out other popular German sites like Cologne Cathedral and the Reichstag Building, with almost 12,000 ratings. In France, the Musee d'Orsay beat out the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées, while other findings like the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands and the Colosseum in Italy were more expected.
Many of Asia's top attractions are tourist must-sees, like Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Petronas Towers in Malaysia. Angkor Wat received a whopping 28,000 reviews compared to the Great Wall at Mutianyu with 16,000.
