Alaska Airlines is running a new Mileage Plan membership campaign that offers a discount code for new members.

If you are not already a member of Mileage Plan — Alaska's loyalty program — sign up by the end of the year and enjoy $25 to $50 off your next flight.

There are a few important terms of this offer. First, members who reside in Alaska are not eligible for this offer. Additionally, your discount code will only be valid for 28 days after you open your Mileage Plan account, so you should plan to book a flight shortly after enrolling.

Once you enroll, you will receive a discount code in your Mileage Plan account within 72 hours.

Additionally, there's a limit of one discount code per new account. The airline also notes that duplicate Mileage Plan accounts created for one individual are subject to deactivation.

How you can leverage this offer

As Alaska has regional flights starting at just $44, the $25-$50 discount included with this offer can bring big savings.

For example, the airline has a huge West Coast flight network with low cash rates. As a result, you can maximize your new member discount code to fly for almost free on many of Alaska's short-haul flights. New members are still liable for paying applicable taxes, fees and other surcharges.

Bottom line

It's always nice when an airline offers a bonus for enrolling in its frequent flyer program.

Alaska is clear that it will suspend duplicate Mileage Plan accounts, and you risk facing other unfavorable consequences if you make duplicate Mileage Plan accounts.

But if you're not already a Mileage Plan member, consider signing up to enjoy up to $50 off your next flight, and begin earning miles on your next Alaska flight.
