Delta is offering new SkyMiles members the opportunity rack up to 40,000 SkyMiles by flying and engaging in partner activity, kind of similar to what US Airways does in their Grand Slam promo. Per the T&C this is for new members and those who have signed up within the last 30 days and “remain opted in to receive (via email) Fare Sales and Last Minute Deals, your SkyMiles Statement, Delta Partner Offers, SkyMiles Promotions, and Travel & SkyMiles Info. Email preferences may be updated by going to delta.com/profile

I tried registering my number, which I’ve had for years, but sadly it rejected it though a friend who signed up 3 weeks ago was able to enroll.

I feel this is not a new promotion. I signed up for it last August.

i have zero miles in my current DL Skymiles account and already booked 4 trip during Sep-Nov anticipating a status match from my AA EXP. Can I register a new account and move these flight to it to take advantage of this offer. Thanks

Thanks for the update TPG! You are one of my travel heros.

I DO NOT have a Delta skymiles account (my Delta miles flown are credited to my Alaska account). I have a RT flight “purchased” through my Starwood AMEX points on Delta for Aug. If I open a Delta Account will I get the bonus miles for this flight, assuming Delta sees this as a “purchased ticket” via AMEX AND I WILL be earning miles for the trip.

I am going from LAX to PHL (via CVG, return via DTW) so my total haul would be roughly 9800 miles for the trip IF I get the bonus miles. The rules you post say the RT has to be purchased and flown AFTER enrollment. I am already ticketed.

My question is this, should I open the account and try for the bonus miles via Delta or just have the miles flown credited to my Alaska account (which I have had great success booking trips on partner accounts, eg. LAX-EZE, SCL-LAX RT this Nov. on AA for 40k pt). I would rather get the miles added to my Alaska account if I am not going to get the Delta Bonus miles.

I don’t have the Delta sky miles card so I would pick that up and get those bonus miles. I was holding out for a 50k sign up bonus which I was hoping might come around as we get closer to Christmas and the heavy shopping season.

Can you please check my logic and let me know if you think I will get the 5k bonus given the above scenario and let me know if I should hold out on getting the Delta Skymiles card.

Sorry for the long email/question. Following you has changed the trajectory of my travel life :)

You still have friends that only signed up for Frequent Flier #s a few weeks ago??

I am one of these guys who just recently signed up as a new Skymiles member. I was Flying Blue Elite, but I now live in the U.S. I registered for this promo this March. Here is my experience:

    1) Bonus miles through flights: flew R/T JFK-SAN. Points posted right with the flight itself as 5,000 bonus. No hassle there, except, as stated needs to be Delta.

    2) Bonus through credit card: I signed up for the Delta AMEX Gold with 40,000 bonus with $1,000 spend within 3 months AND a $100 statement credit after first Delta purchase. I found this offer via testing my girlfriend’s Skyteam number at https://www.deltaamexcard.com/.

This worked out very well, since I had that plan for the SAN trip. Hence card+R/T with new member bonus netted me 40,000 bonus + 5,000 new member + 4,896 flown for $340 minus $100 statement credit = 49896 Skymiles for $240.

Note that I had to fight for the 5,000 AMEX Delta bonus via the promotion…took 8+ weeks so stay on top and email

    3) Bonus through partner: I rented a car in CUN with another promotion (2,000 + 800 Skymiles for 8 day rental). Took forever for Hertz to credit (NOT DL fault). Once point posted the extra 500 was immediate as well.

I have not explored the other options, but I have now a 65,000+ Skymiles account (after a trip for which I got 5,000 due to mechanical issues), and been a member for only 3 months.

What else is worth exploring? Redemption points? Other partners? Does Dining count?

This has been available since April 2011….did you grab this post from Delta Points?

  • Lauren K

does AA have a similar new member bonus program?

also a post suggestion would be to do one on membership programs that reward you for referring a friend. for example, i know amtrak gives you 500 points if you refer a friend and they travel within 90 days. I always hit up all the new hires in our office each summer before they start traveling :)

The +500 point new partner bonuses are really great as they move a lot of the partner offers that previously weren’t worth it into more interesting territory. I think I’ve scored 9 out of the 10 max bonuses so far for 4000 out of 5000 bonus new partner points. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get the 5000 credit card bonus posted no matter how many times I called like NewDeltaGuy said – I’d say the chances of this coming through are so low it’s probably not worth bothwrinf with…

Didn’t see this before…wife is a new SM member and just did a round-trip last week (before signing up for this promo tonight). Any chance they will give her the 5k miles for that if I send a nice e-mail?

  • NewDeltaGuy

Impossible indeed, but the way I got around it was by email. First: have them acknowledge that they owe you the 5,000 skymiles, keep that email, then wait for the 6-8 required weeks, and email again. And again. Once they got tired the finally posted it as ‘Customer Service Resolution’ or the like, i.e. manual credit.

  • Maggie

The Delta link is still working. Is this still a valid deal?

  • JK-NC

Are you aware of the capitol one delta credit card? Is it possible to get this if I switch from AMEX card? So many places don’t take AMEX.
