TPG Content and Community Manager Ryan Gaines takes us through the new Southwest Airlines look. See what Southwest has in store with their rebranding.
With the merger of Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways well underway, Southwest was going to have to repaint all the existing Boeing 737s from AirTran with their livery anyway, so they decided while they were at it, they would refresh the brand all together. This means that all of their branding on aircraft and uniforms, at airports, etc. will be refreshed. The new brand is called Heart and is based on their employees (who are serving from the heart).
This is the third time in 43 years Southwest has updated their aircraft livery. When it comes to the new livery on the planes, I can’t help but notice that the Southwest font has a striking resemblance to the Facebook print.
Another cool feature of the new livery is that each aircraft will have a giant heart on its belly to further represent demonstrate that Southwest is the airline of “LUV”, and that everything they do comes from the heart. I think this is a pretty cool feature they’re adding to their planes.
The Southwest core colors aren’t changing with the revamp, just the design is being refreshed. According to Southwest, the color scheme was chosen to be symbolic, since blue represents “the spirit of reaching new heights,” red represents “the passion for helping their customers,” yellow symbolizes “an exciting new day” for Southwest, and silver adds “energy that will take Southwest into the future.”
The planes aren’t alone in getting a makeover; everything Southwest (from Rapid Rewards frequent flyer cards to onboard snacks) will as well. Hopefully this means there might be some revamped credit card offers as well in the future.
The new appearance won’t affect service. Southwest will still offer two free checked bags, in addition to complimenatry peanuts and pretzels onboard.
It’s an exciting time at Southwest Airlines, as the Wright Amendment is being lifted, so Southwest will be expanding their service from Dallas-Love Field. Southwest is also launching a ton of new international destinations including Aruba, Nassau, Montego Bay, San Juan, Cabo San Lucas, and Cancun to start. Southwest was once known as the airline for short hop flights, but over the past several years that has been changing with the introduction of their 175 passenger Boeing 737-800 aircraft and new international destinations.
