I’ve been presented with a very exciting opportunity to be a part of a panel at the 2015 SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas in March. The festival is a five-day summit featuring presentations and panels from those in emerging technology, websites, video games and start-ups. The mission of SXSW Interactive is rooted in innovation, inspiration and creativity with a focus on the sharing of new ideas.

The Points Guy has been selected to be a part of a panel alongside Wendy Perrin of TripAdvisor and Arabella Bowen of Fodor’s Travel organized by Fodor’s Travel. Our panel is called “Put a Face to the Name: Personalities Build Brands.” We’ll discuss how our travel brands showcase personalities to facilitate consumer trust and interaction.

With so many thought leaders proposing compelling panels and presentations, SXSW conducts a Panel Picker where the public (that’s you!) has a voice in what sessions are scheduled. So we need your help to make this happen. Do you want to see TPG at SXSW? Please go to the SXSW Interactive Panel Picker and vote for our panel. You’ll have to sign in and create an account on the upper righthand corner of the site first, but it’s quick and easy.

SXSW Interactive - March 13-17, 2015

SXSW Interactive – Austin, Texas – March 13-17, 2015

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that our panel’s chosen and the TPG team will definitely plan some fun reader events if we go. We’re counting on you, our TPG readers to get us there, so please take a minute to sign-up and vote. (Hopefully) See you in Austin- one of my favorite cities in America!

And PS Mom TPG says hi

  • Ruthlessly Absurd

You know, between things like this and the fact that now only about 20% of posts by “The Points Guy” are actually by you, the points guy, I wonder if you’re no longer really as interested in the whole travel/miles/points game as you used to be

  • Um

Ruthlessly Absurd is jealous that TPG is living out a sort of dream life that many of us want, clearly.

  • PatMcPSU

So many haters on this site.

  • Stvr

I second Ruthlessly Absurd. Also the “I think I prefer airbnb because I have a dog” and the posts where people stay at hotels without any kind of loyalty status. This is just a play to be some sort of lifestyle guru. Signing out.

  • Redpanda

Awesome, hope you get through. You have my vote.

  • dee seiffer

And my regards to Mom TPG.

  • Ruthlessly Absurd

No I’m really not. I’m in Peru right now, on miles and points. I’m upset that a blogger I used to really enjoy following now just does beginner questions on the weekend, a few posts here and there, and farms out the rest and then asks for our support

  • Ruthlessly Absurd

Expressing disapproval politely does not make one a hater. This is a man who helped me get into this miles and points game and make more travel out of less. And now he doesn’t seem to be interested in the stuff that is the reason I follow his blog.

  • gtg5017

Have to agree a bit. Used to check TPG’s site religiously every morning first thing, and he helped me get into the miles game as well, but I really haven’t seen anything that useful (at least in a timely manner) in quite some time, and now defer to boardingarea primarily. Hoping to see some more original content in the future though.

  • UnitedPDX

I gotta say, I’m with you here Ruthless. Come on pointsguy, stay focused on what you do!

  • jasmine

Whats the big deal. Its a free site its not like we pay a subscription for his articles. if you didnt like the site you wouldnt visit it. I dont see anything wrong with him asking for a vote on his own website.

  • Ruthlessly Absurd

Agreed. I don’t hate the man, I just wish he would return to Points Guy circa 2012

  • thepointsguy

Appreciate the comment- you’re right- I don’t write every post, but I do have complete editorial control over the site and you may not realize all that goes into running a site that gets over 1 million unique visitors a month. I wish I had more hours in the day!

  • thepointsguy

I’m absolutely interested, but in order to grow the site (which has doubled in size every year since inception) I need to increase the number of contributors and scope of content, which takes a ton of time.

  • thepointsguy

    Appreciate it!

  • thepointsguy

Airbnb and vacation rentals are a great way to stay in luxury places for a cheap price. I may not be your run of the mill blogger with a strict focus on chain hotels, but I think the broadened scope of content has resonated with a wide audience of readers. But appreciate you taking the time to give feedback!

  • welovekimberly

good luck!~ took less than 2 min. hope you make it. yes, some posts are better than others, but gratitude shout out to tpg

  • PatMcPSU

I only started to follow the blog recently, and find tons of useful information on here. Yes, this post is asking for us to help him, instead of him helping us, and I understand that you’re inconsolable about things ever working in that direction; but it’s not like he’s neglecting to inform us of current events on the points landscape in order to focus on promoting himself.

You credit him for great experiences you otherwise couldn’t have, but cry foul when he asks you to vote for him in an online poll. That is the behavior of a hater.

  • JM

    Good luck!

I’ll be damned the day I travel on vaca using miles and points, only to log in and complain to someone that helped me get there.

  • Ruthlessly Absurd

I understand that, but I feel the focus of your posts has shifted too much. You seem to be interested mainly in branching out and growing the number of visitors to the site, which I can understand, but I feel it’s to the detriment of your longtime readers.

  • Ruthlessly Absurd

Notice, by the way, that the only one throwing insults (“I understand that you’re inconsolable about things ever working in that direction”) is you. Moreover, at no point did I say that I wouldn’t help him, or accuse him of being untoward when he asked us. I don’t see myself “crying foul” at all.

Again, one is allowed to criticize something or someone without being a hater. Moreover, he engaged me civilly and I responded to him. As I had hoped. He does not need you to swoop down and defend him from who you, wrongly, perceive to be “haters.”

  • Jennifer

TPG, those of us who live in Austin hope you’ll have a meet-up event sometime when you’re in town

  • thepointsguy

If I go, there will definitely be a reader/TPG event in tandem w/ SXSW. Fingers crossed

  • lori bremner

Done! Good luck and thanks for all the great advice and the access to your travel savvy guest bloggers!

  • Eugene

    Done and good luck.

  • Deb I

You could also do a session on points 101 to cut down touring costs for bands at SXSW music. ;) If you have a meet-up in Austin, maybe pick a day that is a crossover night (like the 16th/17th) so those of us in town for the music festival can join in (hint, hint)?

  • Stvr

“Points” guy is the wrong name then.

  • Erik Van Dootingh

    Done. Good luck.

  • thepointsguy

How so? You can still earn and redeem points for Airbnb/rentals

  • JM

Trolls.. let them be. You shouldn’t have to defend yourself…
