Uber and Lyft Aid Families Separated at Border

Yesterday, after much outcry from those on both the right and left about human rights abuses, President Trump signed an executive order stopping the forced separation of migrant families crossing the border illegally.
American, Alaska, Frontier, United and Southwest all penned letters to the US Government stating they wouldn’t willfully help the government transport immigrant children separated from their parents.
Ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft both introduced policies to help the affected families before Trump had signed yesterday’s executive order.
Lyft was providing free rides to 12 organizations that were working to help families who had been detained and separated, Lyft CEO John Zimmer announced.
Lyft also partnered with the International Rescue Community to help refugees in California. Both Lyft and Uber have a significant amount of drivers that are refugees.
Uber donated $100,000 to KIND (Kids in Need of Defense), a legal organization that helps migrant children who entered the US by themselves. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshani said the situation at the border broke his heart and that the policy of forced separation was “just plain wrong.” In a memo to its employees, the company said it would use its legal department to help other law firms that aid immigrants.
The memo, written by Uber Deputy general counsel Tammy Albarrán and SVP of communications and policy Jill Hazelbaker, said:
Uber is better and stronger because we are made up of and serve people from all over the world. We strongly support immigration policies that help people and families who want to build a better life, achieve their dreams, or seek protection from dangerous governments and situations.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky also called for an end to the policy.
