You’ll soon be able to get some java with your meal delivery.
Starbucks and Uber Eats are partnering up to offer coffee delivery in San Francisco and will expand the service to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC, “in the coming weeks.” The service will also pilot in London around the same timeframe, and will expand to other international locations if reception is positive.
Starbucks plans to offer delivery services at nearly 25% of stores in the initial seven launch cities, building on a trial run that began in Miami last September. Nearly every offering on the Starbucks menu will be available for delivery within 30 minutes of ordering time, with an initial booking fee of $2.49. The coffee chain is planning to test delivery programs in other countries this year, with London being the first European city targeted for a pilot later this month.
Although large-scale delivery offerings are new for Starbucks, the concept is not. Former CEO Howard Schultz began talking about the coffee brand’s delivery plans as far back as 2014, and the company has tested delivery services in its headquarter city of Seattle in the past through a partnership with delivery startup Postmates, as well as in the Empire State Building in 2015, although both services have since pivoted in other directions. And Starbucks in China utilizes the Alibaba Group’s Ele.me platform to deliver products out of 2,000 stores across 30 Chinese cities.
