As of Tuesday, San Francisco’s Virgin Hotels property is officially open.
Virgin Hotels San Francisco is located at 250 Fourth Street in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood of Yerba Buena, within walking distance of the Moscone Convention Center and the Yerba Buena Gardens as well as the new Central Subway station, which will connect SoMa with Union Square and Chinatown once the station opens later in 2019.
But don’t expect to book a room at the Virgin Hotels San Francisco. “Calling them rooms is like calling the Space Shuttle an airplane,” boasts the hotel website.
If you’re the sort of guest who appreciates in-room yoga mats and a plethora of electric outlets, you’ll jive with the Virgin Hotels brand’s signature “Chamber” style two-room suites, which combine hallway, closet, and bathroom into one luxurious “Dressing Room’ area, while sliding privacy doors, featuring a little peephole, slide shut to create a personal “Sleeping Lounge.”
Inside your private cocoon, you can expect to find a full vanity with studio-quality mirror lighting; giant closets and decadent showers; retro-styled lounge beds and mini-fridges stocked with snacks at CVS and Walgreens prices. You’ll also enjoy Red Flower toiletries, have access to intimacy kits and be able to find additional amenities for your pets in the room as well.
Each Chamber also comes with a virtual personal assistant named Lucy who is willing and waiting to order room service on your behalf, manage your room temperature settings or even make dinner reservations for you over the phone. And if the Chambers don’t offer enough space to keep you from getting restless, you can wander down to the fitness center, which is open 24/7.
Rooms rates started at $485 per night for a Chamber King and went up to $505 for a Chamber King City View for a stay on Feb. 26, which closely followed the grand opening.
Prices dropped quite a bit heading into mid-March to $268 per night and $284 per night for the same rooms, respectively.
The property has a total of 192 Chambers, two penthouse suites, three restaurants and a rooftop bar on the 12th floor called the Everdene. The hotel design merges “San Francisco’s Victorian-era past, the city’s 1960s rock ‘n’ roll appropriation of Victorian styling, and a 19th-century British feel,” according to the company. In everyday language, that means pops of the Virgin brand’s signature bold, contemporary red accents against clean lines, neutral white walls and warm wood tones.
And if you’re feeling hungry, Virgin Hotels San Francisco features four total dining and drinking options for various occasions: The Commons Club, The Kitchen, rooftop bar Everdene and the Funny Library Coffee Shop, the latter two of which open in early March. Everdene features a lush indoor/outdoor space and offers one of the city’s few publicly-accessible rooftops that offer nearly 360-degree views of San Francisco.
The hotel is the second property in the Virgin Hotels brand — the first location is in Chicago. Though there are only two Virgin Hotels, the chain has a loyalty and customer preference program called The Know.
Guests who become members of The Know “get the best room rates when they book direct. They also get free room upgrades when available, special dining offers and a complimentary nightly happy hour aptly dubbed The Spirit Hour,” Virgin Hotels says on its website. The entire Virgin Group will also be moving under one loyalty system, potentially sometime in 2019, called Virgin Red.
