How you can earn up to $200 in statement credits on home renovations with this new card offer
Update: The offers mentioned below are no longer available.
Sprucing up our homes has been on a lot of our to-do lists the last 12 months. We’ve spent so much time working and living in the same space, and looking at the same four walls — day in and day out — can be monotonous. If you are ready (or have already started) to make upgrades to your living quarters since the pandemic began, then the latest, limited-time offer from American Express comes right on time.
If you apply for select American Express cards through a card member’s referral link from now through May 5, 2021, you can not only earn the standard welcome bonus on the card (after meeting applicable spending requirements). You can also earn up to $200 in statement credits on eligible purchases made at select home-furnishing stores within the first three months of card membership.
It’s always a good idea to keep the bonuses in mind when opening a new credit card, and if you’ve got home renovations on the brain, now may be a great time to add a new Amex card to your wallet from a card member’s referral.
Details on the statement credits
Eligible purchases from the following U.S. home-furnishing stores can you up to $200 in statement credits as a new card member:
- Home Depot
- The Container Store
- Bed Bath & Beyond
- Crate and Barrel (including Crate&Kids)
Again, these statement credits are only available when you open an account through a referral link. Applying through American Express’ website will not trigger the offer.
Where to find a referral link
It’s easy enough to ask friends and family who you know have an eligible card to share a referral link with you. Simply ask them to visit this page, log in to their account and send you a link.
However, if you’re not sure who to ask, feel free to turn to your social networks — as you should be able to find someone there.
And while you’re there, consider joining one of our two Facebook groups: the TPG Lounge or TPG Women. These groups also represent a great resource and active community for all things points and miles, including numerous tips for spending the rewards you’ll enjoy after getting approved for a new Amex card and earning the welcome bonus.
The following is a list of cards that are eligible for the $200 statement credit through a referral link:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express
- The American Express Gold Card
- American Express® Green Card
- The Amex EveryDay Preferred® Credit Card
- The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card
- The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
- The Blue Cash EveryDay® Card from American Express
- American Express Cash Magnet® Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card
Keep in mind that the Hilton and Marriott cobranded American Express cards are not part of this limited-time offer and therefore ineligible to receive the additional credit. And again, you must apply through a referral link to trigger the offer that includes the statement credit.
The information for the Amex Green Card, Amex Cash Magnet, Amex EveryDay Preferred, Amex Everyday has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
How to maximize value
If you’re looking to truly make the most of this offer, there are many ways to get even more value once you’re approved for a card.
One of the best ways to maximize your online purchases is by starting at a shopping portal. These sites can offer additional bonus rewards when buying items from the above merchants. One of our favorites here at TPG is Rakuten, where you can choose to earn cash back or Membership Rewards points for your purchases. At the time of writing, we’re seeing offers through Rakuten at Lowe’s, The Container Store, Anthropologie, and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
Alternatively, you can also elect to earn airline miles or hotel points by starting at your favorite loyalty program’s online portal.
For a quick way to compare earning rates across these sites, be sure to use a shopping portal aggregator.
American Express has added some pretty spectacular offers to some existing card products this year — for example, some card members have been targeted for a $30 PayPal credit on the Platinum card through June 2021 or additional, one-time credits at select merchants. Once you’re approved for a new Amex card, be sure to set up an online account and then navigate to the “Amex Offers & Benefits” section. From there, look for any further discounts or bonuses. While these are targeted, you could wind up saving even more on purchases with your new card.

Maximize Membership Rewards points for travel
Finally, be sure to start looking into how you’re going to redeem your rewards — especially for cards that accrue Membership Rewards points. Being rewarded for doing things we were already planning to do is one of the best things about credit card rewards, and since TPG values Membership Rewards points at 2 cents apiece, you can get incredible value when it comes time to redeem points.
You could transfer points to ANA MileageClub to book round-trip flights to Europe for just 88,000 miles, while transferring them to Singapore KrisFlyer could get you business-class seats on the longest flight in the world — currently operating to New York-JFK rather than Newark (EWR). Another great option is Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, thanks to terrific award options like premium-class flights on ANA.
American Express has a limited-time incentive to open a new, eligible credit card through an existing card member’s referral link. If you are approved for a new card by May 5, you can earn the usual bonus after meeting the minimum spend requirement as well as up to $200 in statement credits at select home-furnishing stores within the first three months.
If you’ve been eyeing a new American Express card but have been putting it off, now could be the perfect time — so reach out to your favorite Amex card holder today so you’re ready to spruce up your home tomorrow.
