From the last date to transfer Starwood points to Amtrak, to the end of the limited-time 100,000 point Marriott credit card sign-up bonus and more, here are four upcoming SPG and Marriott Rewards program deadlines to be aware of…

As the days of summer tick by, we are getting closer to the August 1, 2018, combination of the SPG and Marriott loyalty programs. There are inevitably going to be some ‘last chance’ dates and opportunities as we approach the program merger. While I’m sure additional deadlines will appear in the coming weeks, here are four upcoming Marriott Rewards and SPG deadlines to be aware of in your strategizing.

Last chance to purchase discounted SPG points

First, there is a sale on discounted SPG points that is going on until July 20, 2018. Since SPG as we know it will end on July 31, 2018, this is presumed to be the final opportunity to purchase discounted SPG points before the August 1st cutover.

Deadline to transfer Amex Membership Reward points to SPG

Update:

It looks like July 31 will be the deadline to transfer at the current ratio, but only because the points valuation changes in August so it will become 1,000 : 1,000.

I am 99% sure that a few weeks ago I received notice in the mail that July 31, 2018, was the deadline to transfer American Express Membership Reward points to the Starwood Preferred Guest program. Of course, now that I want to share that information, I can’t find that piece of mail. However, I’m sure enough about what it said to pass that info along. If anyone else received something similar and wants to confirm that information, I’d be appreciative. In response to a reader’s question, I recently did an article exploring the value in transferring Membership Rewards points to SPG in light of their upcoming award chart changes that you can check out here.

The regular transfer ratio from Membership Rewards points in the United States to SPG is a 3:1 ratio, which is not very attractive. I wish they would run at least a 50% transfer bonus before August 1st to bring it to a 2:1 ratio, but so far there are no signs of that happening. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether Marriott Rewards will become an Amex Membership Rewards transfer partner in the future once the programs combine on August 1st.

July 31st deadline to transfer SPG points to Amtrak Guest Rewards

We recently learned that July 31, 2018, is the deadline to transfer SPG points to the Amtrak program. SPG points transfer to Amtrak at a 1:1 ratio, but there is not a 5,000 mile bonus when you transfer 20,000 SPG points to Amtrak Rewards the way there is when transferring to most airline programs.
