A major AvGeek from Ireland just donated the largest model aircraft collection to Shannon Airport (SNN).

Michael Kelly, 67, has been collecting his 2,300 planes for more than half a century and says his passion for aviation began at Shannon Airport when his dad used to take him there to watch planes take off. He sourced his planes, none of which were produced in Ireland, from all over the world. According to Reuters, a friend said that Kelly would spend around $12,000 per year to add to his collection. Kelly's favorite is a Boeing KC Tanker; only 10 exist in the world.

“When I made my first holy communion I asked my mum and dad to take me to Shannon Airport. So I got to see the beautiful aircraft and from that day on I was hooked,” Kelly told Reuters.

All aircraft are 1:200 in scale. The collection includes rarities like the 1930s Sunderland aircraft owned by Al Capone; the Antonov, the world’s largest commercial aircraft; The Spruce Goose of the Hughes Aircraft Company, the largest aircraft never to fly more than once; the first Ryanair Boeing 737 aircraft; and the full Aer Lingus collection.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
