Black Friday hype is already gearing up, and while there are many ways to get discounts on your holiday purchases, Amex Offers is one of our favorites. Many American Express cardholders have reported that they’ve been targeted for deep discounts at major electronic retailers through the Amex Offers program, with our latest (and most favorable) one being Best Buy.
There are actually two different Best Buy Amex Offers currently available, where you can receive either bonus Membership Rewards points or a statement credit. Both offers expire Dec. 31, 2019, and require you to spend at least $300 or more on your enrolled card in one or more eligible transactions in-store or online.
If you have a Membership Rewards-earning card, such as the American Express® Gold Card, American Express® Green Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express, you might see an offer where you’ll earn 3,000 bonus Membership Rewards points for your $300 Best Buy purchase. Based on TPG’s latest valuations, those 3,000 Amex points equal $60.
Or, from a co-branded Amex card such as the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express or Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card, you might see an offer for a $30 statement credit after the same minimum spend.
Now, one tip about Amex Offers is that statement credit offers and Membership Rewards point offers are actually not considered the same. So if you happen to have both Best Buy offers appear, you can even add them both to your account despite American Express’s once per account rule. Fortunately, these offers seem to be widely available, so there’s a good chance that you’ll have both offers. If you have a large Best Buy purchase to make — such as one of their Black Friday doorbuster TV’s — this could account for some serious savings.
Also, if you and your significant other are both eligible, Best Buy will allow you to use more than one credit card in a single transaction, allowing you to stack the savings on each account together for a large purchase. The Best Buy Black Friday ad is already available to preview, so you can figure out now how to combine the deals with this Amex Offer.
For those who don’t have an item to purchase at Best Buy in the near future, you can still maximize this promotion. For starters, you can simply purchase a Best Buy gift card and then use it at a future date. This then allows you to reap the savings benefits well after the holidays. Additionally, Best Buy sells merchant gift cards from various restaurant and gas chains, among many others. You might even be lucky enough to snag a Southwest or Disney gift card — even though these aren’t electronics or Best Buy specific items, they will still trigger the statement credit.
Many Best Buy stores even sell Visa gift cards, which is essentially like getting a discount for having another credit card in your pocket. You can load up to $200 on each Visa gift card, which come with a $5.95 fee. To maximize the offer, you can purchase two gift cards for $300 total (or even slightly less if you take into account the fee). Even though it will cost you $11.90, you’ll still receive $30 back or 3,000 Membership Rewards points depending on your offer. That’s essentially buying Membership Rewards points worth 2 cents each for less than 0.4 cents each.
The savings is even better though if you qualify for both promotions. Purchase three $200 gift cards and do a split tender between your two registered American Express credit cards. The three Visa gift cards will cost you a total of $17.85, but you’ll receive both a $30 statement credit and 3,000 Membership Rewards points (valued at $60). The fee is well worth the $90 in savings, and then you can use those Visa gift cards anywhere Visa is accepted, or even use them as holiday gifts.
Additional Amex Offers on electronics
We also currently see other Amex Offers for Dell and Staples. While you’ll only potentially see these offers on your Membership Rewards earning credit cards if you’re targeted, for those eligible, you’ll receive one additional points for every dollar spent. Both offers go through Dec. 31, 2019.
For the Staples offer, while this might be a good way to increase your points earned, you actually might get more value by using a card that earns 5x points at office supply stores, such as the Ink Business Cash Credit Card. Similar to Best Buy, Staples also sells dozens of third-party retailer gift cards, such as Hotels.com, Amazon and Starbucks. This is a great way to earn extra points even if you don’t need any gadgets or gizmos. The information for the Ink Business Cash has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
As with any Amex Offer, always read the terms and restrictions to ensure your purchase will apply, such as in-store purchases vs. online purchases. Also, you’ll only be able to add the offer to one card per Amex online account, so you’ll want to check all of your cards to select the one that offers the best return on the purchase. Unfortunately, Amex Offers are also targeted, so you may not see these offers at all. But if you do, I’d encourage you to add them right away, since these tend to have limited enrollment and may disappear before the expiration date.
