If you’ve been patiently waiting for a welcome bonus to find its way onto The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express, you’re in luck. Amex just launched a limited-time offer of 10,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $3,000 in eligible purchases on the card within your first 3 months. As a reminder, this is a no annual fee card that earns 2x points on everything under the sun up to $50,000 per calendar year (then 1x).
TPG values Amex Membership Rewards points at 1.9 cents apiece, meaning the welcome bonus is worth $190 — not bad at all for a card that costs you $0 annually to carry. But this is truly a fantastic everyday spending card, because once you’re using it, those 2x points equate to 3.8 cents per dollar, or nearly 4% back on everything from fuel to a new suit. (And, while it’s never fun to replace Tom Ford loafers that the dog destroyed, 2x points should soften the blow just a bit.)
If you’re planning to spend beyond $50k annually, we’d recommend shifting to a category-specific card to maximize earnings. Otherwise, those 2 points per dollar will drop to 1 point per dollar for every purchase beyond the first $50,000.
It’s also worth pointing out that new cardholders will enjoy a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, then a variable rate, currently 12.99%, 16.99% or 20.99%, based on your creditworthiness and other factors as determined at the time of account opening.
According to Amex, the Blue Business Plus was created specifically for smaller small businesses — think sole proprietorships, or young companies with limited revenue that could benefit most from a no-interest intro offer. And, with an all-encompassing 2x bonus, business owners can spend more time focused on growing their companies and less time worrying about which card will earn them the greatest return.
The Blue Business Plus also functions a bit like a hybrid credit/charge card — cardmembers may be able to spend beyond their credit limit as long as that extra amount is paid off in full during the next statement period (in other words, you can’t carry this over-the-limit balance to the next month).
Considering how long it's been since Amex has offered a bonus on the Blue Business Plus, the 10,000-point limited-time welcome bonus makes now a compelling time to add it to your arsenal. Toss in Purchase Protection (safeguarding the items you buy from accidental damage or theft for up to 90 days) and Extended Warranty (which lengthens the original manufacturer's warranty for products you buy by one additional year), and you’ve got even more reason to jump before September 26 comes and goes.
