Amex Introduces Pay With Points at Walmart, Plus Earn 3x Points for a Limited Time

In a move that mimics its partnership with Amazon, American Express is teaming up with Walmart. For a limited time, you can earn 3x Membership Rewards points on all purchases made at Walmart.com. Plus, Amex is introducing the ability to pay with points at the retailer's website.
Any American Express cardholder with a Membership Rewards-earning card is eligible for the promotion. Eligible cards include:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express
- Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card from American Express
TPG values MR points at 1.9 cents apiece — meaning the 3x points leads to a solid 5.7% return. Since Walmart sells just about everything you could imagine (including gift cards to other retailers) this could definitely be a worthwhile promotion. Walmart offers free two-day shipping on eligible items of $35 or more, and unlike with Amazon Prime you don't have to be a member to qualify for the deal.
The ability to earn 3x points at Walmart begins July 30 and runs through August 30. You’ll only earn the bonus points by making purchases through Walmart.com and using the American Express checkout option — meaning any in-store shopping won’t qualify.
Remember that you can earn extra cash back or points by first clicking through a shopping portal. Head over to cashbackmonitor.com before you make your purchase to see where you'd like to earn extra points. The Alaska, American, Delta and United portals are all currently offering 1 mile per dollar at Walmart.
Additionally, like you can at Amazon, you’ll now be able to pay with Amex points at Walmart.com. Similar to other pay with point options, it's not a great way to use points. As seen in the example below, you'd only be getting about 0.7 cents per point when redeeming points against a purchase at Walmart — a pretty bad redemption considering TPG values them at nearly triple that.
To earn the extra points, or to pay with points, when checking out, under payment method click "more" and you'll see an option for American Express Checkout. Entering zero dollars will ensure you don't use any points for the purchase.
