Amazon announced Monday that it has donated more than $100 million to charitable organizations through its AmazonSmile program since it began in 2013.
The online retail giant provides customers with an option to support a charity every time they shop, at no extra cost, through AmazonSmile. The program donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to more than one million charitable organizations of the customer's choice.
But, to thank customers for their charitable efforts, Amazon is increasing its donations even more. Now through Friday, Nov. 2, the company will be donating 5% of the purchase price of eligible items. AmazonSmile donations have helped with charitable efforts like bringing clean water to more than 42,000 people around the world, Scott Harrison, Founder and CEO of Charity: Water, said in a statement.
“Hundreds of thousands of charities have been able to expand their meaningful work thanks to the donations they’ve received through AmazonSmile, and we want to say thank you to customers who are supporting important causes every time they shop,” Jeff Wilke, Amazon's CEO of Worldwide Consumer said in a statement.
Dancing Dreams, a small, local nonprofit, also thanked Amazon's efforts.
"With the donations we receive through AmazonSmile we are able to provide a pair of ballet shoes to every boy and girl with physical needs who comes to our program with a seemingly impossible dream to dance,” Joann Ferrara, the charity's founder, said in a statement.
You can start donating while you shop by signing into your Amazon account at smile.amazon.com.
