As reported this summer, Hyatt is gearing up to add a number of Small Luxury Hotels of the World to its loyalty program portfolio. Now, as of Thursday, roughly 10% of the group’s member properties are now available to book, both with cash and World of Hyatt points.

The vast majority of these 54 initial hotels — of the 500+ Small Luxury Hotels of the World members — are located in Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom, in addition to other countries in Europe, plus one hotel in China and four in Malaysia.

World of Hyatt members will earn 5 base points per $1 spent on eligible room revenue, in addition to elite-qualifying night credits. Elites will also earn additional points, with a 10% bonus for Discoverist members — which comes as a park of the World of Hyatt Credit Card — 20% for Explorist and 30% for Globalist, but all members will be able to take advantage of the following perks at participating hotels when booking paid or award rates through Hyatt:

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Daily Complimentary Continental Breakfast
  • Room Upgrade (one category at check-in if available)
  • Early check-in (noon, based upon availability at check-in)
  • Late check-out (2:00pm, based upon availability at check-in)

These properties are independently owned and may offer significant third-party discounts that are far less common with chain hotels — while Hyatt award bookings could certainly make sense, paid rates on Hyatt’s site this morning are considerably higher than those available through other travel sites.

On The Rocks, for example, is available for 25,000 points per night — worth $425, per our valuations. That’s an appealing redemption rate given the listed cash price of €450 (about $512):

It becomes much less compelling once you start shopping around, though — Agoda has a base room listed for $364, for example, a considerable discount over the Hyatt rate.

Santorini Secrets, meanwhile, shows a base rate of €587 (about $668) on Hyatt’s website, or a redemption priced at Hyatt’s new Category 8 rate of 40,000 points per night, worth $680 based on TPG’s valuations.

Booking through another site saves hundreds of dollars — LastMinuteTravel has a base suite available for $393 (plus tax).

I got an error message each time I tried to book through Hyatt’s site, so it’s entirely possible that the chain is still working to add these hotels to its booking system — lower rates could be loaded later as well. But even with significant third-party discounts, award bookings could offer good value here — especially for World of Hyatt members with tons of points to burn.
