12-Year-Old Boy Steals Parents' Credit Card to Play Hooky in Bali
If you thought "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" was epic, meet this 12-year-old boy from Australia who skipped school to catch a flight to Bali by himself. The boy—who has only been identified by the pseudonym Drew— used his family's credit cards to book a four-day getaway trip to the island paradise in Indonesia.
After his mother told him that he couldn't go on trip to Bali, Drew took matters into his own hands. He woke up one morning and told his parents that he was going to school. Instead, he rode his Razor scooter to the train station near his house and took a train to the airport in Sydney (SYD). He then checked in at the self-service station and boarded a flight to Perth (PER), where he caught a connecting flight to Bali, according to A Current Affair.
Drew researched an airline that allowed children (age 12 and older) to travel unaccompanied. All he needed to travel was a student ID and passport. Airline policies and fees for unaccompanied minors vary between airlines and are constantly subject to change. Drew told A Current Affair that he was only questioned once at the gate before boarding his flight in Perth (PER):
“They just asked for my student ID and passport to prove that I’m over 12 and that I’m in secondary school,” he told A Current Affair. “It was great because I wanted to go on an adventure.”
When he arrived in Bali, Drew made his way to the All Seasons hotel, where he spent four days by himself. According to reports, he told staff he was checking in early and waiting for his sister to arrive later.
Back at home in Sydney, Drew's mother discovered her son was missing after the school reported his absence. When she found out he traveled overseas, she immediately went to Bali to get her son.
According to his mother, known only as Emma, her son doesn’t like hearing the word “no,” she told A Current Affair.
“Shocked, disgusted, there’s no emotion to feel what we felt when we found he left overseas,” she said.
