Editor’s note: This post has been updated with a new welcome offer. It was originally published on April 8, 2019.

When it comes to credit cards, my favorites are those where the annual benefits far outweigh the annual fee. Of course, strong welcome offers are an added bonus, but the ongoing benefits are the ones that get me excited to keep a card from year to year.

IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card is a card that falls into that bucket, and right now is one of the best times to apply for the card due to the elevated offer. Currently, you can earn 150,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Although the card comes with many benefits, my favorite is the annual reward night. This used to be an unrestricted certificate, valid at any IHG property in the world, including overwater bungalows in Bora Bora and fancy rooms in London or Hong Kong that routinely sell for more than $500 a night. Unfortunately, the award night certificates with this card now have more restrictions in place. They are capped at properties costing 40,000 points per night or less. (This holds true as well for any certificates issued post May 1, 2019, with the no-longer-available IHG Rewards Select card.)

Best IHG hotels to use the reward night certificate

Despite the 40k point cap, there are still a number of spectacular IHG hotels where you can use the reward night certificate. Ideally, you’ll want to use the award certificate at the most expensive property you can find, either in points or cash, to feel like you’re getting the maximum value.

Here are some great options for your anniversary night certificate from the IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card:

InterContinental Bangkok

Bangkok takes on a distinctly different feeling depending on where in the city you choose to stay. The InterContinental Bangkok, located just a few blocks from Lumphini Park in the center of the commercial district, reminds you that for all its ancient temples, the “city of angels” is now a bustling metropolis. In addition to six on-site bars and restaurants, guests will enjoy easy access to every corner of the city, as the hotel is also situated on two of the main metro lines. With 381 rooms and suites, this is one of the larger hotels in the city, making it more likely that you’ll find award space on the dates you need.

InterContinental Athenaeum, Athens

The InterContinental Athenaeum Athens offers stunning views overlooking the Acropolis. The hotel’s design pays respect to its ancient Greek surroundings while still delivering modern luxury. After a long day exploring the city or shopping in the boutique galleries and street markets nearby, return to the rooftop bar for champagne cocktails and sweeping views. From the art in the lobby to the comfortable design of the 553 guest rooms, the InterContinental Athenaeum provides a pleasant stay all around.

InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers

The more business-oriented InterContinental Sandton Towers is connected to the Sandton Convention Center, and the staff draws on their local knowledge and experience to help you plan a memorable meeting. Their “Insider Collection” will produce tailor-made participant experiences that range from off-site team-building activities to finding engaging local speakers to add to your lineup. Leisure travelers will still enjoy this hotel for the easy access to food and shopping as well as the spacious and airy guest rooms.

InterContinental Budapest

Guests at the InterContinental Budapest have the unique experience of enjoying three UNESCO World Heritage Sites while staying in one of the most prized pieces of real estate in the city. From the famous Chain Bridge to the Royal Palace and Buda Castle Hill right across the Danube River, the InterContinental is seamlessly integrated with the city. The surrounding neighborhood is full of bars and restaurants, allowing you to get to know the city instead of just watching from a distance.

InterContinental Doha

This InterContinental Doha is located on the city’s longest stretch of private beach and is surrounded by a surprising amount of greenery for a location in the middle of the desert. Whether you’re looking to stay in and enjoy one of the 10 bars and restaurants at the hotel or get out and explore the iconic landmarks of Doha, it’s a great pick.

InterContinental Prague

Situated on the Vlata River, the InterContinental Prague will give you a luxurious stay in the beautiful city of Prague. You are just a stone’s throw away from the Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge, with easy access to many tourist attractions, shops and restaurants. On-site, there is a rooftop restaurant and terrace with jaw-dropping views of the city.

Crowne Plaza London – Kings Cross

Right in the heart of London, you can use your award night certificate at the Crowne Plaza London — Kings Cross. It’s close to King’s Cross St. Pancras Underground station, making getting around London on the Tube extremely accessible. There is a restaurant on-site and even an indoor pool.

One perk of this property is that you can use your award night to book a room with two beds that is big enough for four guests. Many times you’ll find that properties in London and many other areas of Europe only offer standard rooms capped at two guests. This makes this property a great find for families.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hollywood Walk of Fame

Finding a reasonably placed hotel in Los Angeles, especially in the Hollywood area, can be quite challenging, especially when looking to use points. This is where staying at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hollywood Walk of Fame is a great choice. It’s one of the few IHG properties locally costing 40,000 points or less, and using your award certificate will put you in walking distance to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Dolby Theater. You’re also just a short drive to Hollywood Hills, Universal Studios and Griffith Park, where you can visit the famous Hollywood sign. The beaches in Santa Monica are about 15 miles away, but always take traffic into consideration when driving further distances in the LA area.

The best part about using your reward certificate at this property is that you can be booked into a two-queen-bedroom executive suite that can fit up to six guests. There is also an outdoor heated pool and complimentary breakfast.

Holiday Inn Orlando-Disney Springs Area

Visiting Disney World can be expensive and using hotel points is a great way to greatly reduce your out-of-pocket cost. Although not the most luxurious property near Disney, the Holiday Inn Orlando-Disney Springs Area comes with many of the benefits of a park hotel, such as Extra Magic Hours, 60-day FastPass+ reservations and a shuttle to take you to Disney World. Best of all, up to four kids ages 11 and under eat for free at any of the properties on-site restaurants.

Holiday Inn Resort Aruba

Quite possibly one of my favorite properties to use the award night certificate at is the Holiday Inn Resort Aruba. The Holiday Inn brand definitely doesn’t have the same luxury connotations as, say, the InterContinental brand, but this hotel might convince you otherwise. This oceanfront property is smack in the middle of Palm Beach in Aruba so you are experiencing the same beach and restaurants as all of the high-end properties next door. The property also features a kids’ room, which is unusual among hotels in Aruba.

Bottom Line

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to redeem this award night certificate for a stay worth much more than the $89 annual fee (waived for the first year) on the IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card (or the $49 annual fee on the old IHG Select card). Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, you should not have a hard time using your certificate, even at a high-end property.
