The universe of points and miles is similar at times to high school: Some cards are hugely popular and get tons of attention, while others fly a bit under the radar. The Citi Premier Card might not be one of the stars of the points and miles world, but it has a great deal to offer in terms of benefits.

Prospective cardholders are likely to be attracted to the card’s 50,000 point sign-up bonus after spending $4,000 in the first three months, earnings potential and transfer partners, but the Citi Premier also has a very strong set of protections for both the road warrior and the regular shopper. Many of these benefits aren’t found elsewhere — or if you do find them, they’ll come at a much steeper price. When taken together, these perks definitely make this card worthy of a place in your wallet.

Travel Insurance and Benefits

We’ve all been there: a mechanical problem or a weather delay in another city causes your flight to be delayed or cancelled. In situations like this, the Citi Premier has your back with a slew of travel protection perks. Keep in mind that for these coverages and benefits to apply, you’ll need to have paid for travel with your card, and documentation may be required.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption

In the event your trip is interrupted or cancelled for one of the listed causes, you’re covered for the amount of your fare or up to $5,000, whichever is less. In addition to the usual reasons of severe weather or terrorist incidents, sickness or injury to self or family member, the covered reasons also include jury duty, involuntary termination of employment or death or sickness of a pet.

Trip Delay

You’ll be covered for any expenses you may incur up to $500 per traveler, per trip if you’re delayed for more than 12 hours due to weather, a natural disaster, or a strike, quarantine or hijacking.

Baggage Insurance

Lost, stolen or damaged bags — both checked and carry-on — are covered up to $3,000 per traveler, per trip ($2,000 per bag for residents of New York State), up to a total of $10,000 per covered traveler.

Baggage Delay

If your bag doesn’t get to your destination within 6 hours of your arrival, you’re eligible for up to $100 in compensation per covered traveler, and if it’s permanently lost, you’re covered for up to $3,000 per traveler, per trip, or up to $10,000 total for all travelers in the same group.

Travel and Emergency Assistance

Citi will provide medical and legal referrals, along with help for emergencies during your trip. The referrals are free of charge, although you are liable for the costs of any medical or legal services you use.

Travel Accident Insurance

In the event of a disaster, you’re covered up to $500,000 for accidental death or dismemberment.

The Citi Premier has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year.

Car Rental Insurance

The Premier card provides secondary rental car insurance — when you pay for a rental with your Citi Premier and decline the collision damage waiver at the counter, you receive protection against theft or damage to your rental car. Remember that liability and medical coverage are not included, but they should be picked up by your personal primary auto insurance carrier (if you have one) in the event of an accident.

Return, Damage and Theft Protection

The Citi Premier has an equally strong set of benefits for consumers who pay for their purchases with their card. Key among those are 90 Day Return Protection and Damage and Theft Protection.

When it comes to the Return Protection, if a merchant won’t exchange a defective item within 90 days of purchase, you’re covered up to $300 per item and $1,000 per year. For the Damage and Theft Protection, you’ll receive either repairs or a refund if an item is damaged or stolen within 90 days of purchase.

Citi Price Rewind

This interesting and extremely useful benefit is unique to Citi cardholders. Citi Price Rewind will search hundreds of online merchants for a lower price on items already purchased with your card, and then offer to send you a refund for the difference.

Start a Price Rewind tracker on a purchased item and if the system finds a lower price within 60 days of purchase, you can receive the difference between the price you paid and the one Price Rewind discovered, up to a limit of $200 per item and $1,000 per calendar year per account. Or if you happen to find a lower price yourself within 60 days of purchase, you can also manually submit the lower price and request the difference.

Extended Warranty

This benefit extends the manufacturer’s warranty for an additional 24 months past the original expiration date. Even The Platinum Card® from American Express only extends warranties for one year.

Account Protection

When you use the Citi Mobile App, you can control your account through your smart phone or tablet, including adding authorized users to your card and tracking the status of replacement cards that you’ve ordered. And one of the really clever features of the app is the Quick Lock feature — if you lose your card, you can use the app to temporarily block new charges while allowing recurring ones to continue. Then if you find the card later, you can unlock it and use it again normally.

You’ll also get fraud protection, zero liability for unauthorized charges, free access to your FICO score, and assistance with identity theft and billing disputes with the Citi Premier card. And if you have a problem with a purchase, Citi will act as the mediator between you and the merchant to resolve the issue quickly.

Citi Concierge

Having trouble making a restaurant reservation, renting a car or finding the right birthday or anniversary gift? Citi Concierge is at your service. You’ll also have access to Citi Private Pass, which gives cardholders the inside track on tickets to sporting events and concerts.

Bottom Line

The Citi Premier Card has many benefits not generally known to consumers. In addition to the obvious attractions of the card, cardholders have access to a strong array of travel insurance benefits, consumer protections, extended warranty and account protections, as well as perks such as Citi Concierge and Citi Private Pass. Best of all, the $95 annual fee is waived the first year.
