Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.

Right now, we’re seeing cheap flights on American Airlines to the Caribbean from several US cities in basic economy. Starting at just $180 round-trip, you can fly from Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Minneapolis (MSP), Detroit (DTW) and New York (LGA) to Antigua (ANU), Aruba (AUA), Punta Cana (PUJ), Santiago (STI), Santo Domingo (SDQ) and St. Maarten (SXM). Depending on the route, you can fly for the cheap fares in 2018 between September and November, or in 2019 between January and May.

Keep in mind that these discounted fares are in basic economy, meaning added fees and more restrictions in return for the attractive price. However, it’s possible to defeat many of basic economy’s negative aspects by having airline elite status or a co-branded airline credit card.

To search for these flights, head to Google Flights and enter your origin and destination cities. Once you’ve found a date that has the prices you like during dates that are compatible with your schedule, you can book directly through American. Some routes ask you to book the departing and returning flight separately, but many allow you to book together for about $6 more.
