Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.
There’s an assortment of cheap flights from New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), Miami (MIA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Boston (BOS) to Rome (FCO) and Venice (VCE) with prices starting from $344 round-trip. Some of these flights are in basic economy, so be aware of fees on checked luggage and seat selection — a co-branded credit card can help get around some of these extra costs.
To search, head to Google Flights or Fare Compare’s Deal page and enter your origin and destination cities. Scroll through the calendar function on Google Flights to find dates and prices that work for you or enter ‘Anytime’ with Fare Compare to find the absolute cheapest dates. Note that Fare Compare may recommend booking with a smaller OTA for the lowest price — be aware that lesser-known OTAs may be difficult to deal with if you want to make changes to your trip. If you want to minimize any potential headaches, you’re likely better off booking directly with the airline.
