Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.

Puerto Rico is rebuilding nicely, so can book one of these super-cheap fares to the re-establishing Caribbean island. Because Puerto Rico is a US territory, you won't need your passport for this getaway if you are a US citizen. These discounted rates are available from several dozen US cities and are widely available through the end of the year. The lowest fares are available on budget airlines, but even full-service carriers are offering significant savings on their usual prices for these itineraries. Southwest, which doesn't share its prices on Google Flights, is matching the sale from many cities, with rates starting from $98 one-way.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
