Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here – Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express

Amex is currently offering a targeted opportunity to earn up to 5,000 bonus Starpoints with both the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express and the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express. If you currently have both cards, you may be able to earn 10,000 additional points with this promotion. We value Starpoints at 2.7 cents each following the Marriott merger — 5,000 points are worth $135, while 10,000 points are worth $270, making this promo well worth your attention.

For the personal card, head to this page and sign into your Amex account to see if you're eligible. If you're targeted, you'll need to register by October 31, 2016. You'll earn an additional 1x points on the first $5,000 spent on eligible purchases between now and December 31, 2016, for a total of 3 points per dollar on Starwood spend or 2 points per dollar on everything else.

Business cardholders, meanwhile, can get started here. The offer terms are similar, however you'll need to register and complete spending by December 15, 2016. It's worth noting that I was targeted on my business card, but not my personal card. I didn't receive an email about the promotion and I'm rarely targeted for Amex bonus spend offers, so this was a nice surprise. It's definitely worth checking eligibility at both of the links above.

If you were planning to make $5,000 in purchases on either (or both) of these cards over the next few months, this is obviously a no-brainer. If you've shifted spend to another card, it may be worth using the SPG Amex cards instead — at a 2.7-cent valuation, you'll essentially be earning a 5.4% return on everyday purchases and an 8.1% return on Starwood purchases, before factoring in the points you'll earn directly from Starwood Preferred Guest.

Were you targeted for either of these offers?
