Today's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but it's also the first day of New York City's winter Restaurant Week, which runs through February 5 (so it's actually three weeks long, rather than one). There are hundreds of restaurants in Manhattan, Brooklyn and beyond to choose from, with a 3-course lunch priced at $25 or dinner priced at $38. At many of the city's restaurants, that's a heck of a deal.

But wait — there's more! During each Restaurant Week period, Amex offers a $5 statement credit when you spent $25 or more with a registered card. That brings the cost of lunch down to $20 (plus tip and tax).

Now, while you can only get a maximum of one discount per card per transaction (and up to four total credits per card), you can register multiple cards for the promotion. So whereas I may typically pay a $100 dinner bill with my Chase Sapphire Preferred Card to earn 2x points on dining, I'd instead slide over my Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express, Platinum Card from American Express , Premier Rewards Gold and Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express cards, asking the waiter to split the transaction and earning 20% off the meal.

Be sure to enroll your eligible card here (most Amex cards are eligible, excluding corporate and some prepaid cards). Your $5 credits will post within 90 days of the transaction, though you'll likely receive them much sooner than that. Oh, and if you're struggling to find a reservation, don't forget that the Amex Platinum concierge may be able to help you out.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
