There are plenty of great credit cards to choose from, but some offer unique perks that can ultimately save you tons of money each year. Today, TPG Editor-in-Chief Zach Honig shares his experience with Citi Prestige.

Last month, I wrote about my experience getting a replacement Citi Prestige card when I couldn't find mine at home. Citi overnighted the card to Hawaii, without me requesting any sort of priority shipping. Now, generally I would have been fine without one credit card, since I travel with quite a few, including my overall favorite, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, but there's something that makes Prestige indispensable in certain situations — Citi's 4th Night Free benefit.

We've covered this perk in detail in the past, but to summarize, Citi will reimburse you for the fourth consecutive night of a hotel stay — pretty much any hotel stay — provided that you book through a Citi concierge and pay for the stay using your Citi Prestige card. Now this is a fantastic benefit, and it's saved me a lot of money on stays over the last few months.

The Citi Prestige card comes along with a hefty $450 annual fee, but so far I've taken advantage of the following benefits, which in total have gotten me far more than $450 in value:

Sign up for our daily newsletter
  • 50,000 ThankYou points after spending $3,000 in the first three months ($800)
  • 4th Night Free benefit, on three different stays ($1,150)
  • $250 annual air credit ($250)
  • One Admirals Club visit — available every time I fly AA ($50)
  • 3x points on airfare and hotels

Total: $2,250

This is especially exciting when you consider that I first signed up for Citi Prestige in May. Yes, in just four months I've gotten $2,250 in value from a $450 annual-fee credit card. It's a great example of how you can get tremendous value from a credit card, especially those with a high annual fee.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
