Here are a couple of big rewards credit card updates...
Chase Freedom Unlimited Now Available Online
If you (or your partner) don't want any complication in your rewards credit card system, you want to be sure that the one card you most frequently pays out at a high a rate of return per dollar spent. Additionally, you want those points are as valuable to you as possible.
One brand new credit card that will be a top contender for that everyday purchase slot in your wallet is the new Chase Freedom Unlimited. I talked about this card here, but it is now accepting online applications! The sign-up bonus is 15,000 points (advertised as $150 in cash) after you spend $500 on the card in the first 3 months. If you add an authorized user who makes a purchase with the card during that time period get an additional 2,500 points.
Those points will transfer to Chase Ultimate Rewards travel partners if you also have a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred card.
However, the real kicker for this card isn't actually the sign-up bonus, but instead it is the 1.5x that the card earns on purchases. That extra .5 may not seem like much, but it represents a 50% increase in earnings over many other cards which is especially amazing given that it has no annual fee. When you take into account that the card earns points that can potentially be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to United, Hyatt, Southwest if you also have one of those premium Chase Ultimate Rewards cards mentioned above, you will quickly realize that it earns better in non-bonused categories than most of the co-branded cards that all of those programs offer.
The trick with this card is simply getting approved since Chase is very tough these days for people that have four or more new card accounts with any issuer in the last two years. One other approach to consider if you want this card may be to try and change one of your existing Chase cards into the Freedom Unlimited if you don't think you will get approved for a brand new account.
70,000 Points from IHG Rewards Credit Card
The standard public sign-up bonus for the IHG Rewards credit card is 60,000 points, but right now it has been increased to 70,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first three months via what is being called a "special offer". You can up that by another 5,000 points by adding an authorized user who also makes a purchase during that timeframe.
I have seen targeted bonuses for this card go as high as 80,000 points (so log into your IHG account and poke around for that before going for this), but being able to get up to a combined 75k points via this public offer isn't bad at all. I think this card is one that is really worth keeping once you get it since it gives 10% of your redeemed IHG points back up to 100k annually, IHG Platinum status (though that isn't worth much), awards an annual anniversary night you can use at any IHG property each year, and comes with a $0 introductory fee the first year then just $49 in subsequent years.
I love that these increased credit card bonuses just keep coming! Does either card offer align with your family's points needs?
