Can I Use My Household Income on a Credit Card Application?

TPG reader Alan tweeted me to ask:
@thepointsguy – "When applying for a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, can my wife and I both apply so it shows our combined income?"
When you apply for a credit card, the card is either for you or your wife, so the answer would be no. However, you can add an authorized user or a guarantor later.
That being said, you can still list your household income when applying for a credit card, though issuers may become more strict about this in the future. Someone who is a homemaker shouldn't be penalized or be less credit-worthy if their spouse brings in a healthy income and will pay the bills, so you shouldn't feel bad about doing this.
You can always call the credit card company to get confirmation, but I've done it with no problems, as have many other people I know.
