Amex has just announced the date of its annual post-Thanksgiving Small Business Saturday, which will be on November 28 this year.

The first Small Business Saturday took place in 2010, and since then, the day has joined the consumer-driven craze of Black Friday and Cyber Monday as one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Instead of hitting up the big chain stores and online retailers, Amex’s promotion drives business to mom-and-pop shops (including many restaurants) that help fuel local economies.

Get statement credits by shopping at local businesses with your Amex cards.

At present, the Small Business Saturday site is mainly for merchants looking to participate by signing up, getting promotional materials and making sure they're equipped to accept Amex cards. Once we get closer to the event, you’ll be able to search for participating merchants in your area, and we should get details on exactly what kind of rewards Amex cardholders can expect.

In past years, Amex has offered shopping incentives such as a single $25 statement credit per card used at a participating merchant (on a purchase of $25 or more). Last year's incentive was up to three statement credits on purchases of $10 or more for up to $30 in statement credits per registered card.

In order to get statement credits for qualifying purchases with your Amex cards, you must register in advance. The promotion is limited, so you'll want to register all your Amex cards as soon as possible after registration opens — usually a week or two before Small Business Saturday. You can sign up each of your Amex cards separately; for example, if you have three Amex cards and plan to use them all, then register each one so you can earn multiple statement credits when you use them to make qualifying purchases.

A wide range of Amex cards are eligible, including personal cards (like The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express) and business cards (like the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express and the Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN).

Amex cards issued by other banks (like the Penfed Premium Travel Rewards Card) also qualify, as do Serve and Bluebird. However, corporate and prepaid cards (like gift cards) do not qualify for Small Business Saturday credits.

You have several options to register. The first is on You can also log into your Amex account and look for the Small Business Saturday offer tile in the Amex Offers & Benefits tab, or log into the Amex app and visit the Offers For You tab in the membership section. If you've synced your Amex card to your social media accounts, you can add the offer directly to your connected card via, or by Tweeting #AmexShopSmall.

If you don’t currently have an American Express card but are looking to open one — or if you want to get an additional card before registration opens (and there’s plenty of time to do so) — check out our Top Deals page, as well as this recent post on Choosing The Right Amex Small Business Card.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
