Great news for American Express cardholders planning a trip to the South Pacific! There’s a Amex Offer in which targeted cardholders can receive significant points or cash back bonuses on purchases with Australian flag carrier, Qantas.

For the uninitiated, Amex Offers are opt-in, limited-time deals specifically for targeted American Express cardholders, such as $100 cash back for spending $500 with Aerolineas Argentinas (offer available through 9/27), 20% cash back on Delta flights, 15% cash back on Starbucks purchases and more.

Now through September 23, targeted cardholders can get 20,000 bonus Membership Rewards points (worth $380 according to TPG's latest valuations) or a $200 statement credit for spending $1,000 with the airline (in one or more transactions). The only major restrictions are that the flights must be booked on Qantas’ US website in USD and that they must originate in US. So, booking through an online travel agency — such as Orbitz, Expedia or even the Amex Travel portal — won’t qualify.

Cardholders have reported seeing it on The American Express® Gold Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, though it could also be available on additional Amex cards. To see if you’ve been targeted — and to enroll in the offer — log in to your account and scroll down to the “Amex Offers and Benefits” section. You may need to click “Load More” to see the offer.

Qantas is a member of the Oneworld Alliance and flies nonstop from Brisbane (BNE), Melbourne (MEL) and Sydney (SYD) to Los Angeles (LAX), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO). Round-trip economy tickets between the US and Australia average around $1,000, so targeted cardholders should have no trouble meeting that minimum.

You can credit the flights to American to earn AAdvantage miles and elite credits with the airline. Plus, the earnings for Qantas flights are based on distance flown instead of dollars spent, so they can rack up pretty quickly for flights between the US and Australia.

Not interested in this offer? There are plenty of other Amex Offers which can score you money-saving discounts on many general purchases as well as cash back on travel purchases charged to your Amex. And if you have multiple American Express cards, be sure to check each one's offers.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
