With many airline and hotel partners, credit card points give you the ability to choose how you want to redeem your points since they aren’t banked with just one airline. If you’re just getting started, give our beginner’s guide a read.

While there is no “best” card for earning points, there are a few that earn more points per purchase than others. Things to consider when choosing a card for earning points: What do you spend your money on? Does any card offer bonus categories (earns more than 1 point per dollar spent) on those categories? A sign-up bonus, also referred to as a welcome bonus, is a set number of points you’ll earn after signing up for a new credit card and meeting a minimum spending requirement within a set time period (usually 30-90 days from being approved for the card).
Unfortunately you can’t transfer airline miles or hotel points. But airline alliances and partners usually let you book flights on other airlines that are part of the same alliance as the airline your points are banked with (e.g. United is part of Star Alliance, so you can use United miles to book seats on Lufthansa, another Star Alliance airline).
