An Etihad Airways flight en route to New York (JFK) from Abu Dhabi (AUH) made an emergency landing in Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF) on Monday morning. Etihad Airways Flight 103 departed from AUH at 3:40am local time before declaring a medical emergency on board and diverting to Iceland’s primary airport.

After nearly nine hours in the air, the A380 — registration A6-APE — made its landing at KEF. According to Etihad, the aircraft diverted because of a sick passenger on board.

The aircraft was on the ground at KEF for approximately three hours before continuing on to its original destination — New York-Kennedy (JFK) — at 11:42am local time. Video shot by a passenger shows the A380’s landing at KEF, reporting also that the crew remained “extremely professional” and “kept everyone informed.”

The behemoth A380 is certainly a rare sight at the relatively small Keflavik airport. Before this diversion, Airbus brought the aircraft to KEF in both 2006 and 2008 during a strong crosswind testing period to see how the new aircraft handled the winds at the airport.
