The first credit card I obtained that had an annual fee of more than $100 was the Amex Platinum several years ago. The annual fee was a little lower back then than it is now, but still, the idea of paying hundreds of dollars for a rewards card took some getting used to. However, the math was solid as the 100,000 transferable Membership Reward points I received as a welcome bonus after hitting the spending requirement were worth at least $1,500 when I used them to book travel with the Membership Rewards partners. Between the welcome points and the other built-in perks and credits, such as the $200 airline fee credit available each calendar year, I more than came out ahead.
Today (February 16, 2018), the Amex Platinum is again available with a 100,000 point welcome bonus for some lucky individuals via CardMatch™! This offer is obviously much higher than the 60,000 point standard version of this bonus. Unfortunately, this Amex Platinum offer that awards 100,000 points after you make $5,000 in purchases in the first 3 months won’t be open to everyone, but the only way to find out for sure if you are eligible is to head to CardMatch.
The Amex Platinum card provides up to $200 in annual Uber credits, a $200 annual airline fee credit, access to airport lounges such as the Amex Centurion Lounge network, real perks when through booking hotels via the Fine Hotel & Resorts Collection, and more.
The Amex Platinum has a $550 annual fee, but as I learned first-hand years ago, that can be 100% worth it when you are getting 100,000 welcome points that you can use at a fixed value towards travel or transfer to a number of partners including Delta, Singapore, British Airways, ANA, and more to maximize the various award charts. The Membership Rewards program sometimes even offers transfer bonuses so you can move your points to some their hotel and airline partner programs at an improved transfer ratio.
This 100,000 point Amex Platinum offer is only occasionally found on CardMatch, and it historically has disappeared as quickly and unexpectedly as it appears. This means I would not wait if you want to log in and check to see if you are eligible for the increased offer.
While you are at it, stay on the lookout within CardMatch for other increased offers as I am seeing a 50,000 points welcome offer for the Amex Premier Rewards Gold, which is great as there is a $0 intro fee the first year with that Membership Rewards earning product. I am also seeing increased cash back offers for the Blue Cash EveryDay and Blue Cash Preferred, so it isn’t just the Amex Platinum that is available for some folks with an increased bonus.
