Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency, such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.

Italy is one of the more popular European destinations, and if you’ve always wanted to see the Colosseum or stroll through the trendy Navigli District, you’ll want to take a look at some of the airfares currently available. Right now we’re seeing deals to both Rome (FCO) and Milan (MXP) on all three airline alliances, with prices starting at $407 round-trip.

The best dates and airlines depend on which city you’re departing from, but these itineraries are available both in February/March, and then again in the fall months of September through November. You don’t need any tricks to find these deals — just look for the dates you want using Google Flights, then book on Orbitz, Expedia or directly with the airline itself.

Since these are international trips on mainstream carriers — and most of them are not in Basic Economy — you’ll get your first checked bag free and a complimentary meal during the flight.

Airlines: American/Finnair/British Airways (Oneworld), United/Lufthansa/Swiss (Star Alliance), Delta/Alitalia (SkyTeam)
Cost: $407+ round-trip in economy
Dates: February-March and September-November
Booking Link: Orbitz, Expedia or directly with the airline
Pay With: The Platinum Card from American Express (5x on airfare), Chase Sapphire Reserve, Citi Prestige (5x on airfare) or Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2x on travel)

Here are a few examples of what you can book:

New York/Newark (EWR) to Rome, Italy (FCO) for $407 round-trip via Orbitz:

Los Angeles (LAX) to Milan, Italy (MXP) for $422 round-trip via Orbitz:

San Francisco (SFO) to Rome (FCO) for $432 round-trip via Orbitz:
