Like other issuers, American Express has long offered a referral program to encourage you to recruit new cardholders. This is a great way to earn some extra rewards with very little effort — all you have to do is get a friend or family member to sign up for a card with the link you provide, and you'll earn some points or miles while they'll be rewarded with an often-hefty welcome offer.
Of course, those you refer will still need to be approved for a card, but you don't have to spend anything or take any further action to earn the extra rewards. Just note that there's a maximum number of points or miles you can receive for referring people per calendar year — for example, with the Platinum Card from American Express, you're capped at earning 55,000 points per year.
