Here’s a look at the coolest new hotels opening around the world in June, including the launch of Ian Schrager’s new brand and a sumptuous Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills.
1. Detroit Foundation Hotel
Number of Rooms: 100
Three Interesting Facts: 1. The Detroit Foundation Hotel is the latest property from the up-and-coming Aparium Hotel Group, whose name you might recognize from its press-lavished locations in Milwaukee (Iron Horse), Minneapolis (Hewing) and New Orleans (Pontchartrain). 2. Repurposing existing real estate into hotels is smart for many reasons, but it’s extra-relevant in Detroit (which, by the way, is one of the most interesting cities in America right now). The Foundation occupies the old downtown headquarters of the Detroit Fire Department. 3. The entire first floor of the hotel is given over to the Apparatus Room, where the fire trucks and equipment used to be stored — in its new incarnation, it’s a restaurant run by Thomas Lents, the two Michelin Star Chicago chef formerly of Sixteen at Trump Tower who’s heading back home to Michigan for the gig.

2. Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills
Location: Los Angeles
Number of Rooms: 170
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Announced back in 2014, the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills is one of the most anticipated hotel openings of the year. Located on the high-profile corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards adjacent the famous Beverly Hilton, the hotel’s 12-story curving tower is the brand’s first new-built on the West Coast. 2. Luxury is the name of the game here, from the Pierre-Yves Rochor interiors (think Art Deco geometry, arabesque carpets and a triple-height gold-plated white lobby) to the Swiss La Prairie spa and Jean-Georges restaurant, another West coast debut. 3. When booking at the Waldorf Beverly Hills, you’ll definitely want to be logged into your Honors account. The hotel is offering discounts (indicated below) for members that can save you $20-$100 on the standard rate depending how far in advance you book.
Loyalty Program: Hilton Honors
Price: From $575 or 95,000 Honors points per night. Book with the Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express, which lets you earn 12x points on stays at eligible properties within the brand’s portfolio of hotels and resorts.
3. Hilton Tanger City Center Hotel & Residences
Location: Tangier, Morocco
Number of Rooms: 182
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Located on the coastline of Tangier in Morocco, this Hilton hotel/condo is part of the shiny new City Center development, which includes a mall, movie theater, offices and a second property, a Hilton Garden Inn. 2. There’s a sleek 13th-floor rooftop infinity pool that overlooks the Bay of Tangier. The hotel is also just a few minute’s walk to the city’s main beach. 3. Rooms and suites — 58 of them at the executive level with lounge access — are spacious and decorated with mid-century furniture and a neutral alabaster-and-beige palette.
Loyalty Program: Hilton Honors
Price: From $249 or 25,000 Honors points per night. Book with the Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express, which lets you earn 12x points on stays at eligible properties within the brand’s portfolio of hotels and resorts.
4. Rosewood Puebla
Location: Puebla, Mexico
Number of Rooms: 78
Three Interesting Facts: 1. This is the fourth Mexican property in Rosewood’s portfolio, joining others in the Riviera Maya, San Miguel de Allende and Cabo San Lucas. Puebla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is probably the least known internationally among those destinations, but its star is on the rise with travelers to the country’s culture-rich interior thanks to its deeply rooted culinary traditions, trove of Mexican Baroque architecture and a plethora of universities, second in number only to Mexico City. 2. Rosewood follows a “Sense of Place” philosophy for its brand, channeled here through Talavera tiles, which originate in Puebla, coloring the resort’s collection of colonial-era buildings. 3. The hotel connects visitors to Puebla’s rich culinary history through a robust program of food-related activities, from market tours with the executive chef, Jorge Gonzalez, to cooking classes and wine seminars.

5. AC Hotel San Juan Condado
Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Number of Rooms: 233
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Puerto Rico is a lot cheaper to get to than other Caribbean islands, has rich local culture, doesn’t require a passport for US visitors. Best of all, it’s full of new and newly renovated hotels at reasonable prices, including this new AC property on Ashford Avenue, the main hotel drag in San Juan’s ritzy Condado neighborhood. 2. The AC San Juan is not a new build but a full renovation of the old Ambassador Hotel. Marriott spent a reported $45 million on the building’s new look. 3. The hotel has all the usual brand-wide AC amenities (modern, airy rooms; AC Kitchen and Lounge), as well as a rooftop pool with Caribbean views.
Loyalty Program: Marriott
Price: From $128 or 30,000 Marriott Rewards Points per night. Book with the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card to earn up to 5x points on your stay.
Location: New York’s Lower East Side
Number of Rooms: 285
Three Interesting Facts: 1. PUBLIC is the new brand from Ian Schrager, the impresario often credited with creating the boutique hotel boom in New York in the ’90s. He’s called all the big players in for this project on the Lower East Side, including architects Herzog & de Meuron and Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichte, who’s having a busy month. 2. “Luxury for all” is the guiding theme for PUBLIC, which eschews traditional amenities like bellhops, check-in desks and turn-down service in favor of communal workstations, idyllic gardens and a grab-and-go gourmet grocery. 3. Price is one of PUBLIC’s defining features, with rates starting at an Airbnb-competing $150 per night. In Manhattan. You read that right.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $150 per night. Book with the Citi Prestige card to earn 3x points on your stay and take advantage of its nifty fourth night free perk, or the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card to earn 3x points on travel purchases — the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card lets you earn 2x points on travel as well.
7. Palácio Tangará
Location: São Paulo, Brazil
Number of Rooms: 450
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Located on Burle Marx Park, one of bustling São Paulo’s peaceful green spaces, the regal castle-like Tangara is part of the German-based Oetker Collection, which includes notable properties like London’s Lanesborough and the Hotel du Cap-Eden Roc in Cap d’Antibes, France. 2. Another luxury hotel opening, another Jean-Georges restaurant. Really! Palácio Tangará will be home to the chef’s first restaurant in South America, featuring Asian and Brazilian dishes. 3. Rooms are plush, with French doors, floral curtains and tufted headboards — and each room has a terrace or balcony overlooking the park.
Loyalty Program: N/A
Price: From $141 per night.
8. Kimpton Aertson Hotel
Number of Rooms: 108
Three Interesting Facts: 1. The anchor of a mixed-use development on the edge of Vanderbilt University, the Aertson is Kimpton’s first property in the Nashville market. The name comes from the university’s Dutch patriarch, Jan van Aertson. 2. There’s an outdoor pool and cabanas on the eighth floor and, unusual for Kimpton hotels, a spa. It’s operated separately by the Woodhouse brand, but is adjacent to the hotel. 3. Stitched leather, wood paneling, concrete and custom art from famous local print house, Hatch Show Print, give the brown, white and navy rooms a balanced industrial/folksy ’60s vibe.
Loyalty Program: Kimpton Karma Rewards (still pending integration into parent company, IHG’s program)
Price: From $329 per night.
9. The Westin Los Cabos Resort Villas & Spa
Location: Los Cabos, Mexico
Number of Rooms: 147
Three Interesting Facts: 1. The “new” Westin Los Cabos is a renovation and renaming of the Westin Regina, one of most architecturally iconic hotels in Mexico. The main tower is a sweeping, sea-facing, terracotta-colored curve with a giant cut-out gateway in middle. It’s all very dramatic and fortunately, nothing about that has changed. 2. What has changed are the now-refreshed rooms, spa and six restaurants. 3. Rooms start at 506-square-feet, making “villa” a subjective term, but each is equipped with a washer/dryer and kitchenette with dishwasher, stove, fridge and microwave, perfect if you want to hit the on-site grocery or stock up on local produce at the famous Flora Farms or San José del Cabo’s Mercado Organico on Saturdays.
Loyalty Program: Starwood
Price: From $258 or 20,000 Starpoints per night. Book with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express so you can earn up to 5x Starpoints on eligible Starwood stays.
10. Domaine Misincu
Location: Cap Corse, Corsica (France)
Number of Rooms: 29
Three Interesting Facts: 1. Part of France’s Phoenix Hotel Collection and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Domaine Misincu is a boutique property on Corsica’s ruggedly gorgeous Cape Corse on the island’s north end. 2. The hotel, a full renovation of an old property, resides within 86 acres of gardens that amble down to the beach. There are hiking paths, a tiny wedding chapel, olive groves, beehives, bridges and streams ripe for exploring, but Corsica’s second largest city, Bastia, is a short drive away. 3. The hotel is the only five-star-rated property in the area and there’s even a fleet of Teslas available for guests to zip around the island.
Loyalty Program: N/A
