Exciting New Airline Routes for June 2017 and Beyond

Airlines around the world launch and announce dozens of new flight routes and service changes every month. Today, I’ll share just a few of the latest flights that will take to the skies this month or in the near future. Keep in mind that exact flight details (like schedules and aircraft, among other things) may change based on your travel dates.

Low-Cost Carrier LEVEL Begins Service Between the West Coast and Barcelona (BCN) (launched June 1 and 2)

Details — LEVEL, a brand-new entrant in the low-cost airline category recently launched by the company that also owns British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus, started twice-weekly service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Barcelona (BCN) on June 1, and flights three times a week from Oakland (OAK) on June 2. TPG’s Associate Editor Emily McNutt was a passenger on the inaugural flight from Barcelona to LAX and reports that the carrier has a lot going for it, but still has a number of kinks to work out.

Icelandair Adds Service Between Philadelphia (PHL) and Reykjavik (KEF) (launched May 30)

Details — Another low-cost carrier increased service between the US and Europe as Icelandair launched 4x a week flights between Philadelphia (PHL) and Reykjavik/Keflavik (KEF) in Iceland on May 30. The carrier will employ its 757 on the route and will be the only carrier operating nonstop between the two cities.

Southwest Expands With 22 New Routes In One Day (launched June 4)

Details — The reigning king of the 737 deployed its aircraft on nearly two dozen new routes on June 4, including its first ever flights to and from Cincinnati (CVG) and Grand Cayman (GCM). The expanded service also features seven city pairs the airline currently has all to itself without any competition — Cincinnati to Chicago/Midway (MDW), Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) to Grand Cayman, Ft. Lauderdale to Belize City, Denver (DEN) to Pensacola (PNS), New York/Newark (EWR) to Oakland (OAK), San Diego (SAN) to Indianapolis (IND) and San Diego to Spokane (GEG).

Norwegian Connects the East Coast to Edinburgh (EDI) (launched June 15, 16 and 17)

Details — There’s no stopping the European low-cost carrier Norwegian, as the airline began service to Edinburgh from three East Coast cities — Newburgh/Stewart (SWF) on June 15, Providence (PVD) on June 16 and Hartford (BDL) on June 17. TPG Editorial Director James Oliver Cury flew on the inaugural flight from Newburgh — which is 60 miles from Manhattan, New York — and wrote that while the airline’s staff is friendly and boarding was smooth, the carrier features tight seats and unimpressive food.

Air Berlin Commences Service Between West Coast Cities and Berlin (TXL) (launched May 16 and May 29)

Details — Oneworld carrier Air Berlin added 3x weekly service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Berlin on May 16 and flights four times a week from San Francisco (SFO) on May 29. The carrier is flying both routes with Airbus A330-200 aircraft and currently provides service to its flag country of Germany from Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Miami (MIA) and New York (JFK) in addition to the pair of California cities.

NEW ROUTES ANNOUNCED IN JUNE 2017

United To Add Nonstop Service Between Los Angeles (LAX) and Singapore (SIN)

Details — On October 27, United will claim the title of the world’s longest Dreamliner flight when it launches nonstop service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Singapore (SIN). The flight, which covers 8,700 miles and will take 17 hours and 55 minutes to fly in the westbound direction, complements United’s existing nonstop service to Singapore from San Francisco (SFO). United does not yet have Polaris seats installed on its 787-9 aircraft, so this flight will be configured with the older hard product in business.

Norwegian Beginning Routes To Rome (FCO) From Three US Cities

Details — The Oslo-based low-cost carrier Norwegian is planning to add Rome (FCO) to its repertoire of transatlantic cities with flights four times a week from New York/Newark (EWR) starting November 9, plus twice-weekly flights from Los Angeles (LAX) beginning November 11 and also 2x a week from Oakland (OAK) on February 6, 2018. All three new routes will be flown using Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and the airline says once service has been established, it expects to increase the frequencies to six times a week from Newark and three times a week from Los Angeles in February 2018.

Allegiant Air Announces 3 New Cities and 28 New Routes

Details — In its biggest expansion ever, Allegiant Air will add 28 new routes to its network including service to three new cities — Biloxi (GPT), Milwaukee (MKE) and Norfolk (ORF). The carrier will launch its new destinations on August 30 with flights between Biloxi and Orlando/Sanford (SFB), and other routes will be rolled out throughout the fall. Allegiant’s base in Phoenix-Mesa (AZA) will see the most new routes with eight additional nonstop cities added to its total.

Hainan Airlines To Launch First Nonstop Between New York and Western China

Details — The first-ever nonstop route between New York and a city in Western China will begin on October 20 when Hainan Airlines inaugurates service between New York (JFK) and Chongqing, China (CKG). The twice-weekly service will be operated by a Dreamliner and represents Hainan’s second route between Chongqing and the US — the carrier started service to Los Angeles (LAX) back in March.

Delta Opens Bookings For Airbus A350 Flights on Three Routes

Details — We’ve been patiently waiting for Delta’s brand-new Airbus A350-900s to be delivered and deployed, and that moment is finally close at hand. The airline has opened bookings for the new aircraft — which features its new Delta One suites — on three routes originating from Detroit (DTW). A350 flights to Tokyo/Narita (NRT) will begin October 30, with additional aircraft being added to the nonstop route to Seoul Incheon (ICN) on alternating days beginning November 18 and Beijing (PEK) on January 17, 2018. Customers booking in Delta’s new Premium Select premium economy cabin are also receiving first-class seats on connecting flights in or out of Detroit on the same ticket.
