Tip: How to Take More Vacation Time

Americans took an average of 12 vacations days in 2016, which is less time off than most of the industrialized world. Though some workers are allowed a total of 15 days, guilt and worry kept many from taking advantage of all their allotted vacation days.

But by implementing a couple of strategies in the workplace, you should be able to utilize all of your vacation days — guilt free. Here are some tips:

1. Change Your Mindset
Vacation days are included in work contracts, yet many workers still feel uncomfortable taking days off. Vacation is an agreed condition of employment. Imagine if you had to ask your boss for your paycheck every two weeks. Remember that days off are part of the deal — so you should take them.

2. Work With Your Coworkers
Your coworkers may need to pick up any extra work while you’re away, so make sure to include them in plans and discussions, ensuring a smooth transition in and out of work.

3. Plan Well in Advance
While this may seem obvious, the earlier your trip is planned, the easier it will be to execute smoothly. Knowing your trip’s schedule months in advance can allow you to finish all foreseeable work before you head out, leaving your co-workers with less work and you with less stress.

4. Work With Already-Scheduled Holidays
Most companies have an allotted number of vacation days, along with certain holidays off. In order to conserve vacation days, plan trips around holidays such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day or President’s Day. Just make sure to plan ahead with coworkers, as these can be popular vacation times.
