Following Alaska Airlines’ recent acquisition of Virgin America, members of Virgin’s Elevate program have had the ability to transfer miles to Alaska’s Mileage Plan at a ratio of 1:1.3. Now, Alaska’s sweetening the deal — if you’re a current Elevate member and sign up for Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, you’ll receive a choice of 10,000 miles (worth $190 according to TPG’s most recent valuations) or $100 redeemable towards a ticket. Originally, the deadline for this offer was January 31 but it’s now been extended to February 28.
You’ve probably given some thought to whether or not you should transfer your Elevate points to Alaska Mileage Plan, but long story short, unless you’ve got a specific redemption in mind for those Alaska miles, wait to transfer your points over as the points can only be transferred one way.
For savvy travelers who have already activated Elevate and Alaska accounts and can’t take advantage of the free miles, don’t worry — Alaska isn’t excluding you. You’ll also find 10,000 bonus miles deposited into your Mileage Plan account, as long as you’ve had activity in both accounts within the past 18 months.
