Southwest Mistakenly Sent Out Companion Pass Confirmations

Southwest Airlines started the year by announcing that hotel transfers would no longer count toward qualification for the Companion Pass. Nevertheless, the Companion Pass is still one of the most lucrative travel rewards in the industry. And today, it looks like the carrier mistakenly sent out Companion Pass emails to a number of Rapid Rewards members — who were then told that it wouldn’t be honored.
According to several TPG readers on Twitter, they received the email stating they’d achieved Companion Pass eligibility.

However, it turns out that the carrier sent the emails to targeted Rapid Rewards members by mistake. In tweets to several Rapid Rewards members who received the email, the carrier said that it’s not honoring the passes.

It’s not exactly clear how Rapid Rewards members were targeted for this mistake, and no one in the TPG office received it. We reached out to a TPG reader who received the offer, and she said that she earned the Companion Pass in 2015, so she had it through all of 2016. In addition, she has both the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card.
