Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend that you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency, such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using the American Express Platinum Card, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.
Recently there have been many fantastic fares from the US to Iceland and Scandinavia on low-cost carriers like Norwegian and Wow Air. Today, however, full-service carrier Finnair is offering discounted fares on flights between the East Coast and Helsinki, Finland. We're seeing fares as low as $330 round-trip from New York (JFK) to Helsinki (HEL). There are great deals to be had from Boston (BOS) as well, but those flights will require a stop in each direction.
It can be bitterly cold in Finland during the winter months, but this time of year makes for one of the best times to enjoy the Northern Lights. There are limited dates at the end February while almost every date in March is available to book. You should start with Google Flights to find your desired dates, and then you can finish the booking on American or Finnair's site.
