We don’t cover Avianca all that much at TPG — the airline’s LifeMiles frequent-flyer program does offer some solid redemption opportunities, but call center issues make changing or redepositing a canceled award challenging at best. We’ve heard from airline insiders that a fix is underway, but until then all but the most advanced points and miles gurus might want to redeem from other Star Alliance programs, instead — despite Avianca’s frequent (and fantastic) mileage sales.
Given the improvements that the LifeMiles team is working on behind the scenes, it’s notable that Starwood Preferred Guest has just added Avianca as its 36th transfer partner — you can convert your Starpoints to LifeMiles at a 1:1 ratio, plus you’ll receive the usual 5,000-mile bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer. One of the best redemption opportunities is for Lufthansa first class — New York to Europe will run you 87,000 miles, with no fuel surcharges. This new SPG transfer option appears to be available now.
