On top of the buy miles promotion, United is currently discounting many round-trip domestic award tickets at up to 20%. You could put your winnings towards a discounted round-trip ticket to destinations as far as Alaska or Hawaii. If you want even more miles, you could consider applying for the United MileagePlus Explorer Card from Chase which is currently offering a sign-up bonus of 40,000 miles after spending $2,000 within the first three months of account opening.
