Exciting New Routes for July 2016 and Beyond

Each month, airlines around the world launch and announce dozens of new flight routes and service changes — and today, TPG Points & Miles Editor Sarah Silbert shares just a few of the latest flights that will take to the skies this month or in the near future. Keep in mind that exact flight details (e.g., flight schedules, aircraft and more) may change based on travel dates.

NEW ROUTES LAUNCHED IN JULY 2016

San Francisco (SFO) - Hangzhou (HGH) on United (launched July 13)

Details — Earlier this month, United began thrice-weekly nonstop flights between San Francisco and Hangzhou's Xiaoshan International Airport aboard its 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This brings the number of mainland China cities serviced by the airline to five. The new route departs SFO on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and departs Hangzhou on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Newark (EWR) - Addis Ababa (ADD) on Ethiopian Airlines (launched July 3)

Details — Ethiopian Airlines reinstated service between Newark and Addis Ababa, a route it had previously operated but decided to end back in 2004. Through August 5, the carrier is operating three weekly flights with its Dreamliner 787-8, and it will then increase the frequency to four times a week. Ethiopian offers service in each direction on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with a Friday flights starting in August. Flights in each direction include a stop in Lomé, Togo. If this route doesn't align with your travel plans but you'd like to fly Ethiopian's Dreamliner, consider catching its flight from Los Angeles to Dublin.

New Service from the US to Edinburgh on Wow Air (launched July 16)

Iceland-based low-cost carrier WOW Air added service connecting Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI) with four US cities: Baltimore, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. All routes operate twice a week with a connection in Reykjavik. Flights from the West Coast to Iceland operate on the carrier's single-class A330 aircraft, while those from the East Coast and Reykjavik to Edinburgh use the A321. All outbound flights from the US depart on Tuesday and Saturday, while flights from Europe leave on Wednesday and Sunday.

Southwest to Begin Nonstop Service Between Newark and Puerto Rico

Details — We're starting to see some positive effects of the FAA's decision to ease slot restrictions at Newark Airport. Exhibit A? Southwest recently announced that it will launch nonstop flights each Saturday between EWR and San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) starting December 17, 2016. Newark has long been dominated by United flights, and this news could mean more low-cost carriers will begin offering routes through the busy airport. Southwest's new flight will be its only nonstop option to Puerto Rico from the New York City area, and to celebrate its launch, the carrier's offering special fares starting at $128 one-way for the first several months.

JetBlue Launching Seasonal Mint Service to Grenada Next Year

Details — In January 2017, JetBlue will add a fifth Caribbean destination to its ever-expanding list of premium-service routes. The carrier will offer seasonal Mint service between Grenada and New York-JFK on Saturdays between January 21 and April 29, in addition to the year-round service it offers on this route on Saturdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Alaska Airlines to Launch Daily Service from Three West Coast Cities to Newark

Details — West Coast-based travelers will soon have another option for traveling to the New York City area, as Alaska recently announced that it will add service from Portland (starting November 10), San Diego (starting November 21) and San Jose (starting March 12, 2017) to Newark. These new flights are another positive result of the FAA's decision to ease slot restrictions at EWR, and they could help drive airfare down now that there's more competition on these routes.

Allegiant Air Adds Service to New York and Adds Three New Cities

Details — Allegiant will be launching several new routes just in time for the holiday travel season. The airline is adding four new flights to Newark, marking the first time Allegiant will serve the New York City area. The carrier also plans to add service between Ogdensburg, New York and two new cities and a handful of other new domestic routes. The first to launch will be Provo, Utah (PVU) to San Diego (SAN) on September 28, 2016.

Fly Singapore Airlines from Houston to Manchester Starting in October

Details — On October 30, Singapore Airlines will axe its Houston-Moscow and Munich-Manchester flights in favor of a new Houston-Manchester route operated with its 777-300ER aircraft. The flight will be available five times a week, and will continue on to Singapore after the stop in the UK.
