In addition to all of the other perks that you get as an SPG Platinum member, elites who stay at least 50 nights get to select from a list of annual benefits, that in the past have ranged from 10 suite upgrades to a $100 Amazon gift card. Well, for 2016, SPG is shaking things up, removing some of last year's options and adding a few more. The new perks are arguably more valuable than those Starwood scrapped from last year (including a $100 Amazon gift card, TSA Precheck access and four Uber rides up to $25 each).

Here are the new perks Starwood's offering this year:

  • Free rental up to 5 days with Silvercar
  • Free night award at any Category 1-5 hotel or resort
  • 5 Elite Qualifying Nights toward earning a higher status during the current year
  • 40% off a hotel bed, including the Westin Heavenly Bed
You can still choose 10 suite night awards as your annual Platinum perk.
You can still choose 10 suite night awards as your annual Platinum perk.

In addition, you'll also be able to choose one of the following perks from 2015 instead of one of those listed above:

  • 10 Suite Night Awards
  • Gift Gold status to a friend or family member
  • Donation to UNICEF

You can make your pick of one perk after earning 50 nights in a calendar year. And don't forget, you can start off the year with up to 10 elite night credits — you'll earn 5 night credits from the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express and an additional 5 from the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express. Once you've earned 50 night credits, you can select your perk here.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either. Our opinions are our own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by our advertising partners.
