Ever since JetBlue launched Mint a few years ago, airlines have been significantly stepping up their game on the transcon market — specifically flights operating between New York City and Los Angeles/San Francisco. Not only have American, Delta and United all introduced improved aircraft and service on transcon routes, they’ve also lowered prices significantly, bringing a round-trip business-class flight down to just $1,198 when you book at least two weeks in advance.
Well, now it appears that Delta’s improving its transcon operation even further, adding an Airbus A330-300 on the JFK-LAX route beginning in February.
As you can see in the screenshot above, the A330 offers a wider cabin and a better seat — Delta’s 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone seat, compared to the staggered 1-2-1 available on the 767. It also offers more business-class seats (34, vs. 26 on the 767).
As I mentioned, round-trip flights in Delta One (business class) are available for as little as $1,198 round-trip, which is a steal compared to what these flights used to cost. For now, Delta’s only operating the A330 once each day in each direction, departing JFK at 6:15pm (Delta 41) and returning from LAX at 10:55pm (Delta 1262).
Naturally, economy is much cheaper — you can fly for as little as $155 each way. As Delta typically operates the A330 on long-haul international flights, you can expect a more comfortable ride in coach as well. It’s unclear how long Delta will be operating the A330 on this route, but it appears to be in place at least through the end of March. TPG loved his A330 flight to Istanbul in Delta One, so if you can get on this plane (rather than the 767 or 757), you definitely should.
