While partnerships and cross-promotions between airlines and hotels is a staple of the points and miles game, offers for earning points through Airbnb stays have been thin on the ground. But that’s about to change with Virgin America’s new promotion, which is custom-made for fans of Airbnb.
A unique aspect of this partnership is that it benefits both guests and hosts, and you only have to remember two things: you need your Virgin America Elevate number handy, and you have to use Airbnb through the dedicated Virgin America portal. Here’s how it works:
The first time you use your Elevate number to complete a booking, you get 1,500 points credited to your account. For every time after that, you get 1 point for every dollar spent on Airbnb through the portal.
If you’re an Airbnb host, you will earn 20,000 Elevate points after your first stay is completed as long as you use the portal for the booking.
TPG values Virgin America Elevate points at up to 2.3 cents each. So the 1,500 points for your first completed Airbnb guest booking yields up to a whopping $34.50; taking an average of $200 per night on Airbnb, that’s 200 points, or $4.60 worth of Elevate points per night.
As a host it’s a one-time, 20,000-point earn, which gets you a value of up to $460 – real money, considering that a weekend flight from New York (JFK) to Vegas (LAS) is as low as $305 round trip:
So it looks like being an Airbnb host through Virgin America’s promotion is much more profitable than being a guest, unless you spend seriously big bucks on home stays.
